WHAT IS BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL?

Blade of the Immortal fight scene anime

This has been the name of both a manga series under the production of Hiroaki Samura as well as the anime series that is based on that work. The series takes place in Japan in the middle of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and it tells the story of the afflicted samurai Manji, who’s tasked with eliminating one thousand malevolent individuals in order to reclaim his mortality.

This series was animated by Liden, and Hiroshi Hamasaki is in charge of directing it. Makoto Fukami is in charge of composing, Shingo Ogiso is responsible for character design, and Eiko Ishibashi is in charge of the series’ musical composition. On October 10, 2019, it was made available for the first time through Amazon. It was reported on October 15, 2020, when Sentai Filmworks obtained the rights to distribute the anime at home video beginning in the winter of 2021. On January 19, 2021, the anime was made available on Blu-ray for the first time.

PLOT

Blade of the Immortal 1

At the beginning of the series, we are introduced to Rin, a young woman whose whole family as well as the personnel of the dojo that they managed were murdered by a gang known as Itto-ryu. The organization’s claimed objective was to demonstrate that Japanese swordsmen are worthless.

Young Rin vowed vengeance after seeing her mother raped and her father murdered in front of her eyes. In order to fulfill this objective, she has spent the last two years honing her fighting skills. However, just as she is coming to terms with her incapacity, she happens upon Yaobikuni inside a cemetery.

Yaobikuni proposes that she search for Manji, the renowned murderer who may assist her in accomplishing her goal. Rin locates him, and finally, after many challenges, he agrees to assist her. He does so in large part due to the fact that she resembles him— his younger sister, despite the fact that their relationship quickly takes a very different turn. This marks the beginning of an expedition filled with bloodshed and mayhem.

The first seven episodes of the series are structured around an “enemy of the week” format. In each episode, Manji is pitted against a new foe and must use his immortal nature to triumph over them.

This pattern continues even after the first seven episodes have concluded. Those first episodes assist in trying to introduce Rin and Manji as well as the purposes for their inevitable bond, however the real story doesn’t begin until after that. When Kagehisa, the leader and head of the Itto-ryu, is introduced, together with a lot of key as well as recurring supporting characters such as Taito, Hyakurin, Makie, Giichi, Shira, and also Habaki Kagimura.

Other characters include Taito and Makie. As we go through the story and meet characters such as robbers, savage killers, guys with special intentions, and prostitutes, we come to understand that there is indeed a third set of people trying to act, that are in reality opposed to Itto-ryu and also have powers that are comparable to their own. This facet not only provides the story with an additional layer of depth, but also greatly boosts the difficulty level, and as a result, the reader’s engagement in the plot of this story.

CHARACTERS

Manji

Blade of the Immortal Manji scene

The title’s everlasting. He is not lazy, yet he is frequently observed napping. Manji at the  same time has a weird notion of “honour” that resembles the Itto-Ryu fighting-ethic. Until he discovered his master was corrupt, hence he murdered him.

The fallen warrior and samurai Manji guarded and served the well-known Hatamoto Horii, a small and local daimy. He was branded an outlaw and chased down by that very same daimy tribe, earning the moniker “Killer of 100”.

He intended to run to his sister’s place, despite the fact that she had wedded a cop. When his sister’s husband assaulted Manji, Manji killed him in self-defense. Witnessing her brother’s murder of her spouse, his sister became so mad that she started to behave lika a child as she went insane.   Manji sat down to care for her. During this period, he encountered Yaobikuni, a mystery nun who handed him a kessen-chu, or holy bloodworms which made him eternal.

Rin Asano

Blade of the Immortal Rin Asano scene

The lone survivor of a slaughter committed by Anotsu against members of the Itt-ryu sword school, as well as the successor to the “Mutenichi-ryu” sword school her father founded. She is not very skilled with a sword, but she has a strong desire to exact revenge to the violent murder of her family.

Her character is portrayed  as someone who is trying hard to seem like an adult, though as the series develops, she does start to embody adulthood as she progressively “grows up” as well as loses most of her naivety.

In the beginning of the series, she is presented as someone who is still very immature and childish. During her journey, she will have Manji serve as her personal bodyguard. Anotsu believes that Rin is more aligned with the Itt-ryu. Rin is completely torn  between righteousness and their mission as she fears becoming a hypocrite and a liar as a result of Anotsu’s claims.

Blade of the Immortal

As she travels farther down the road to vengeance, she eventually comes face to face with Anotsu, who asserts that she’s more similar to the Itt-ryu.

The things that Anotsu has said are giving her cause for concern. After eventually coming face to face with Anotsu at Kaga, she comes to the conclusion that she is powerless against him and decides to follow him on a journey instead. It is possible that she will have the opportunity to carry out her plan to murder him if he begins to trust her.
