that will make u laugh thumbnail

What is life if you cannot have a good laugh every now and then? However, what one person finds funny will not always make another person laugh. So, I asked around and put together a list of anime that I find amusing as well as the anime that made the people I know laugh.

So, my fellow anime lovers, let’s begin!

Jahy, powerful second in command to the ruler of the Dark Realm, is thrusted into the human world as a normal powerless child after the Dark Realm is destroyed. She is now forced to learn how to live as a normal child whilst trying to find a way to restore her home and her previous power.

Watching a once powerful demon, who was seductive and powerful struggle to find her way trapped into the body of a cute as heck child is funny and her struggles to adapt to her new life and lack of powers make this a great anime.

Following the daily lives of Yoshitake, Hidenori and Tadakuni, three boys at an all-boys high school—this anime is a slice of life with a hilarious side. The three boys are normal teenagers who are fascinated by girls. Attending a boy’s school makes real girls seem like unicorns—mythical creatures they have no idea how to approach.

They spend a lot of their time coming up with ridiculous theories on how girls work and how to get a girl. Most of the time they are so far off base, it is incredibly amusing. Maybe if they just tried approaching a real girl they would find they are not as mysterious as they think!

This anime does not appear on a lot of lists, but I like to try and stray away from the norm at times.

Detroit Metal City is about a Death Metal Band lead by its over-the-top singer Johannes Krauser ll. To his fans, he is known to be a demon who rose from hell to bring mortals to their knees—not over the top at all!

But this is why this anime is funny because Johannes is about as much of a demon as I am! Souchi Negishi is the person underneath all the make-up and death metal screams, he is actually more like a teddy bear than a demon! He is quiet, studious, and loves Swedish pop music! This extreme difference in his real and on-stage personas lead to some brilliant comedic moments as he tries to balance his two lives — it is like Hannah Montana but with more make-up and screaming. ISTG it’s worth a watch!

15. Nichijou

Nichijou is different from your usual anime in that it is more a series of stories built up around the three main characters Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi and Mai Minakami with the stories of those around them built in. It adds stories of characters such as Hakase Shinonome, Nano (a robot caretaker) and Sakamoto (a talking cat).

Nichijou manages to bring humour to normal everyday life whilst throwing in things that are, frankly bizarre! Without a clear story line, this is not for everyone but if you want to laugh at every day traumas of school kids such as school life, crows that bite you on the way to school whilst talking to you and a deer that takes great delight in tormenting the principal, you will love this anime!

One Punch Man is centred around Saitama and his ability to take out every bad guy he meets with one punch, it is all there in the title! Being able to defeat everyone you face gets boring after a while, especially when you take down bad guys as a hobby. Taking Genos—a cyborg under his wing — reluctantly — Saitama joins the Hero Association. He fails his written exams and so is the lowest rank and unnoticed, despite his power.

Saitama’s lack of expression when he defeats enemies who have taken down everyone else with no problems, his relationship with Genos and his battle with his nemesis mosquitos make this a fantastic all-round anime, with action and comedy to suit all tastes.

Sakamoto has it all going for himself. He is popular, cool and everything he does he does better than anyone else. A first year at Gakubun High School, he is attractive and everything he does, he does with flair. Whilst this can make you popular, it can also make people jealous!

This anime is over the top and Sakamoto is so ridiculously perfect, you can’t help but laugh. If someone tries to take him down with a prank, he just ends up looking cooler than he did before.

Having a perfect main character is a risk, but Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto manages to make it work with comedy and brilliant characters.

Kaguya and Miyuki are members of an academy where the best of the best go to school, and they are the elite! Being at the top of the pack can be a lonely place, especially when you are too proud to admit that you love each other!

Now the battle begins between them to force their crush to be the first to confess their love for the other.

kaguya sama season 3 plot 1

In this battle, you win by losing! It would have been so much easier but less amusing if they had just let go of their pride and told each other how they felt — but where is the fun in that?

Having a narrator in the background is unusual in anime, however, it works. The narrator is so over-the-top that it just adds to the craziness of the situation. Should admitting you have feelings for someone really by this hard?

Sora and Shiro are brother and sister who live online and game together under the username, Blank.

Everything changes when they are invited to play a chess match which leads them to another world, where everything is solved by playing games. Tet, the God of Games, shows them how the world works, and they are brought to a world where all life is determined by childish games!

No game no life

Sora is 18 years old, but Shiro is just a child, aged 11 and credit should be given to the writers for putting across how young she really is.

However, she is not against using her age as an excuse for how she acts at times! The anime has some funny moments, often with Stephanie, a naive Immanity girl bearing the brunt of things. After losing at blackjack, she has to act like a dog for a whole day and after losing at rock-paper-scissors she is ordered to fall in love with Sora leading to her trying to fight it, in overly dramatic, amusing ways!

So, in normal life when you die, you are dead. That’s it. Done. Sakura Minamoto, however, after losing her life in a tragic accident whilst rushing to post her idol application, she suddenly finds herself waking up 10 years after she died. She has no memory of her life before she woke up but in one way, her idol dream is about to come true!

Kotaro Tatsumi is creating an idol group to help bring the Saga Prefecture back to life, ironically by using zombie girls. Sakura is now a member of the Zombie Land Saga Project, with 6 other girls from different eras of Japanese history. Saki Nikaido, Ai Mizuno, Junko Konno, Yugiri, Lily Hoshikawa and Tae Yamada make up the idol group.

The humour runs throughout the series, sometimes subtle, sometimes in your face! Personally, how poor Sakura met her end makes me laugh so hard that, frankly, it is worrying. Added to that, the problems faced by zombies keeping their limbs attached during performances, leads to some great comedy moments. I highly recommend this anime!

9. Gintama

The era of the samurai ended with the arrival of the Amanto and their technology which changed the world for samurai such as Ginotoki. Now forced to make money where they can, he is a Yorozuya, a samurai for hire. His idea of work however is more laying on a sofa, reading and drinking strawberry milk. Collaborating with his employees (who are not paid) Shinpachi and Kagura, the trio find their way in the new world.

From Gintoki’s legendary scream of terror every time he is scared, ongoing gags such as shouting catchphrases to (thankfully for the younger viewers!) censor squares blocking bare body parts—there is something for everyone in this funny, engaging anime.

8. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

Saiki just wants a normal high school life, without being the centre of attention. However, when you have incredible psychic powers and other skills such as teleportation it makes it difficult to stay under the radar! He tries so hard but being super intelligent on top of having insane powers makes that pretty much impossible.

This wonderfully chaotic and fast paced anime will make you laugh in every single episode; there is no relief from the humour. The story is filled with one off gag jokes and also a series of long running gags which pop up throughout the story.

There are so many examples I could give but to spark your interest I must mention the long running gags based around Saiki’s inability to understand modern art and his many attempts to try and understand it. His love of coffee jelly is used time and again as the punchline to a joke or by other characters as a way to hold power over Saiki.

If you love an anime that is packed full of humour, this is the one for you!

The main character Yukki, finds himself in the world of Astraea with no memory of who he is or where he came from. Kokkoro, an elf, finds him and acts as his guide to the new world showing him how to get by in a world with monsters and adventurers. Joined by Pecorine, a girl skilled in battle with a huge appetite and Karyl, a cat girl with magic powers they build their own guild and explore the world in hope of reviving Yukki’s missing memories.

This anime is full of great comedic incidents. It is hard to bring attention to just one but if I had to, I would say that the great pudding incident is a standout moment. It is not everyday you get to see characters being turned into puddings. This is a brilliant, funny anime and is definitely worth a watch!

6. Kill La Kill

Kill la Kill is a high school anime with a difference. Honnoji Academy is ruled by Satsuki Kiryuin and her terrifying student council. Given extra powers by their school uniforms, known as Goku

Uniforms, they rule the school with iron fist. Ryuki Matoi is a transfer student, with half a pair of scissors and a sentient school uniform called Senketsu. Determined to find the person who has the other half of her scissors and in doing so solve her father’s murder, Ryuki uses Senketsu’s powers to take on Satsuki Kiryuin and find the truth.

Again, on the outside this sounds like a serious anime with a serious topic, but it is hard to not laugh with supporting characters such as Mako Mankanshoku, the world’s craziest best friend and Akkurou Mikisugi, a teacher with a secret and an aversion to wearing clothes. Kill la Kill is non stop craziness and slapstick situations guaranteed to make you laugh!

5. Angel Beats

I was in two minds whether to add Angel Beats to this list because it would also belong on a list of anime that made this writer cry like a baby! However, it is also funny, and I laughed as well. So, for the sake of this list, let’s look at why it deserves to be here.

When the main character, Otonashi, wakes up dead (l know, I know but that is what happened!) he finds himself in an afterlife that is basically high school. He is met by Yuri, leader of the Shinda Sekai Sensen (Afterlife Battlefront) who gets caught in an eternal battle against Tenshi, the evil angel. Not convinced, because she looks like a sweetheart, Otonashi tries to talk to Tenshi, but it does not go well and he learns an important lesson, if you die here, you respawn repeatedly.

Why have I added this to a list about animes that make you laugh considering it is about death? Well, the Battlefront are basically a clueless bunch of geeks whose plans never go right, and they spend most of their time meeting their end in ridiculous ways before reappearing at headquarters to do it all again. If you like an anime that hits all your emotions, Angel Beats is for you!

Sistine Fibel is a student at Alzano Imperial Magic Academy who takes her education very seriously and when Glenn Radars turns up to be her new teacher, she is disappointed. Glenn is everything she would not want in a teacher; lazy, scruffy, and apparently useless at magic. Personally, he is everything I would love to have had as a teacher; he is cute as heck! However, everything is not always as it seems when it comes to Glen!

Sistine’s growing frustration with Glenn and his apparent lack of teaching and magic skill allow for some brilliantly funny scenes between the two characters. As one of my favourite animes of all time, I highly recommend it and challenge you not to fall for the charm and chaotic nature of Glenn Radars!

lori Kitahara is about to start university, an exciting but challenging part of anyone’s life. Heading to Izu University in the beautiful beach town of Izu, he sees pretty girls in bikinis and lots of fun in his future!

His uncle owns a scuba shop named Grand Blue which is to be lori’s new home. Arriving to start his new life, he pushes open the door to the shop excited for his new life of sunshine, fun and friends but what he finds is not what he is expecting!!! To be fair to Iori, who does expect a shop full of university students who are drunk as skunks and as bare as the day they were born!

Grand Blue Dreaming header

Seeing a potential new drinking buddy, they convince lori to join them and he finds that with a little liquid encouragement, he is the star of the party! Following this, he joins the diving club.

This anime has many funny moments. People lose their clothing at inappropriate times and the constant surprise of the diving club members every time they dive in! This anime is great fun and reminds me of my university days!! Oh, the shame!

Picture the scene, you have a gruelling day at work and go out for a drink or ten, and then stumble into a forest and come face-to-face with a dragon. Sounds like a good night, right? For Kobayashi that is exactly what happens at the beginning of this amazing series. After pulling a sword from the injured dragon (who can transform into a cute as heck girl with horns and a tail), Kobayashi makes an offer that will change her life!

There are so many comedic parts to this anime and as more characters are introduced, the more chaotic it gets. If you want to watch a light, and fun anime, I highly recommend Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. It has it all — maids, cuteness, cute girls (who are dragons) and a bemused office worker thrown into a life she never expected!

1. Konosuba

Konosuba

Where do I start with this masterpiece of comedic genius! Konosuba is my go-to anime when I want to laugh til I cry!

Kazuma Satou meets his end in a ‘traffic accident’. And following his untimely passing, he opens his eyes to see a Goddess named Aqua who asks him if he would like to start again in a new world. Of course, he says absolutely and choses Aqua as the one thing he is allowed to take with him. It is a shame she is about as much use as a chocolate teapot!

Konosuba Conclusion

Let’s circle back to how our hero ended up here. He died saving a girl from being run over by a tractor—except he didn’t. He gallantly jumped in front of the slowest moving tractor in Japan and died in fright whilst wetting his pants. Not the heroic end he thought.

I really don’t know where to start with how funny this anime is. Kazuma goes on a journey with Darkness, a female knight with no fighting skills at all; Megumin, a female wizard who knocks herself out every time she uses her magic; and Aqua, a Goddess who seems to get eaten by frogs so often—like on a daily basis kind of often. If they don’t make you laugh, I’m afraid nothing will.

Did you shed tears from laughing?

love is war

There are many anime out there that could have been added to this list and there really is something for everyone. Finding the perfect anime that matches your sense of humour is a great feeling and I hope this list gives you some ideas for your future viewing reference.
