The Samurai trope in the world of anime/manga has always been extremely popular. Personally, I also have a thing for Samurai (wink,wink). Manga creators and animators have brought the history of Samurai to life through their works during the past fifty years and the masses have been greatly influenced by it. Kage Gari aka Shadow Hunters is one of the oldest manga about Samurai. This manga first came out in 1969. It tells us about three ronins, Jubei, Sunlight and Moonlight, their adventures, and how they dedicate their lives to only one goal: to exterminate the ninja spies of the Tokugawa period. The manga was later adapted into two movies in 1972.

We have another manga that is set in the Tokugawa period. In Tsukikage Ran, we’re introduced to a female samurai named Ran and a Chinese martial artist, Meow. Both of them are travelers and face every kind of adversity during their adventures. This manga is really fun to read and I would personally suggest you read this one. You won’t be disappointed!

Takemitsu Zamurai tells us the story of the ronin Souichirou Senou who moves to his new place in Katagi apartments. He soon realizes that his neighbors are not really fond of him and nor do they trust him. However, he ends up befriending the carpenter’s son, Kankichi. Souichirou decides to stay away from violence and with Kankichi’s help, he exchanges his precious sword, Kunifusa, for a bamboo blade. He starts his new and peaceful life in Edo.
Violence always follows Souichirou as he realizes that he is being followed by an assassin named Shinnosuke Kikuchi. Now, Kikuchi is extremely dangerous and tends to torture his targets. He won’t spare anyone who comes in between him and his target. Souichirou must keep himself and other people around him safe from the deadly assassin and in order to do that, he must become the fearless samurai he once was yet again.

Linn Suzuki is our MC in this manga. She’s strolling down the streets of Tokyo when she’s attacked by a bunch of thugs. Fortunately, she’s saved by a stranger named Miho Kuon. Now, it appears that Linn has gotten away from her mistress that had been cruel to her and traveled all the way to Edo. She’s there to search for her brother who was apparently working for the Kuon Detective Agency. Miho offers Linn to stay with her. Miho’s life is not easy at all. She had been chased by an agency called the Syndicate and now Linn must suffer from the consequences of staying with her.

This one has amazing artwork and a great storyline. Sengoku Basara opens in the Sengoku period. There is a war going on amongst warlords in order to create a central government for the country and unify the country under it. Nobunaga Oda considers himself above all of the rulers and also possesses strong military forces. He believes that he can conquer Japan easily.
We’re then introduced to Shingen Takeda and Yukimura Sanada who helped Nobunaga Oda by exterminating the clans that were in Oda’s way. There came a time when Yukimura Sanada and Masamune Date had to fight face to face. Though they were enemies, they admired each other greatly.
Nobunaga, on the other hand, was getting out of control. Both Sanada and Date had to throw away their rivalry in order to stop Nobunaga and save Japan.

Peace Maker Kurogane tells us the story of a boy from the Choushu Domain, Ichimura Tetsunosuke, who had to go through the trauma of his parents getting murdered in front of his eyes. He then decided to contact Shinsengumi to become one of its members.
However, Ichimura Tetsunosuke lacked the will, power and courage to eliminate whoever threatened the peace of Shinsengumi. He was not alone. He had his brother, Tetsunosuke, with him. He also made a lot of friends in Shinsengumi. But will he be able to handle all the blood that his peers are going to shed while training him to become unstoppable? You guys should definitely check this manga out!

We’re introduced to a high school student, Kotetsu Miyasaka, who along with his brother, Yayoyi, are obsessed with Kendo. They’re also extremely good at it. However, Yayoi lacks a little bit of skill. He decides to enroll in a different school than his brother. There, he comes across a Kendo prodigy, Chihiro Kawase. Now, Chihiro wants Yayoi to mess with his brother’s shinai in order for Chihiro to automatically win without much struggle.
Yayoi doesn’t want to do such a heinous thing and comes home after getting a good beating from Chihiro. Kotetsu analyzes the situation and challenges Chihiro in a steel-sword fight. During the fight, Kotetsu mysteriously goes back in time to the Edo period.
He is then interrogated by the head of a band of Roushi, Souzou Sagara. He acknowledges Kotetsu’s strength and asks him to join him and he agrees. Strangely enough, Kotetsu comes across many familiar faces but their personalities and identities are completely different in this era. Kotetsu must survive the harsh environment and change the history of Japan.

The story of this one is just incredible! We’re introduced to a samurai who helped with the Mongol invasion. But he had to face famine and was betrayed by his own people. One day, he woke up and found himself in Valhalla. Now, he must find his way back home to get reunited with his son. However, his journey will be a difficult one.

We’re taken back to the Tokugawa Shogunate yet again. We all know how bad the situation was by the end of 1855 in Japan. This manga takes us to that very time where there was political war. We are introduced to two orphan brothers, Shoutarou Yukimura and Gentarou Yukimura, who are trying to survive in such harsh circumstances. They have nothing but their father’s sword with them. Will they be able to get through all of this safely?

Path of Assassin tells us the story of Hattori Hanzo. He was a famous ninja of the Sengoku era. His duty was to protect Tokugawa Ieyasu. Tokugawa Ieyasu was the hereditary commander in chief of Japan who had to unite Japan. Hattori Hanzo had to take care of Tokugawa Ieyasu at all costs. He’s also quite friendly with him. It is the story of the bond between the two and it also shows us how capable Hattori Hanzo was as a caretaker.

Laughing Under the Clouds has a really interesting storyline. The story takes us back to the Meiji period. A prison from which no one can escape, Gokumonjou, has been erected. It was only to combat the soaring crime rate at that period of time. We’re introduced to the Kumou family who are serving as the ferryman. Their job is not an easy one but they still lead happy and peaceful lives in the town of Oumi.
However, Oumi is full of threats and the biggest of them all is “Orochi”. Orochi is a huge serpent that is said to awaken in the form of a human every three hundred years. It is the duty of the Kumou family to keep the monster sealed. The Kumou brothers are oblivious to this fact and are continuing their peaceful lives. However, the truth will be revealed to them shortly.

The Edo era was full of samurai and their incredible sword fighting styles. Schichika Yasuri is one such samurai who uses a very fascinating sword-fighting style, Kyotouryuu, in which the whole body of a person acts as a blade. Shichika is in exile with his sister, Nanami. Their lives are disturbed when a strategist named Togame comes into their lives. Togame is in search of twelve swords known as the “Deviant Blades” and she needs Shichika’s help. Shichika agrees to help her and is interested in her. Now, the swords they’re in search of have deadly wielders. The two must work together in order to eliminate the threats waiting for them and to obtain the Deviant Blades.

Another manga set in the Edo period, Gantz:E tells us the story of a peasant named Hanbe who proposed to a girl named O-Haru. O-Haru is not interested and has her eyes on Masakichi from another village. Hanbe goes in search of Masakichi and it is revealed to him that Masakichi, despite being a peasant, is a skilled swordsman. They both confront each other but they have to jump in the river to save a drowning girl. Both of them start getting unconscious and find themselves in a Gantz room after waking up.

Samurai Deeper Kyo takes us back to the civil wars in the 17th century. Two skilled swordsmen are fighting head on, one of them being Kyoushirou Mibo and the other “Demon Eyes” Kyou. Both of them are busy fighting and just then, a meteor falls upon them, making them vanish.
Fast forward four years, we see Kyoushirou working as a medicine man but has a huge debt to pay. He’s hunted down by Yuya Shiina, a bounty hunter. Just when Yuya Shiina is about to attack
Kyoushirou, a monster attacks them and wants to consume Kyoushirou. This encounter awakens “Demon Eyes’’ who was trapped inside of Kyoushirou’s mind. And that’s how the two swordsmen in one body begin their adventure.

Jubei Kibagami is a swordsman for hire as he was betrayed by his previous master. One day, he happens to come across a female ninja named Kagero who was being attacked by a man who could make his body hard as a stone. Jubei saved Kagero from that man. Kagero reveals to him that she had been investigating a mysterious plague that destroyed a whole village. But that stone-like man along with his allies is in her way. Jubei decides to help her and the two set out on a journey.

House of Five Leaves takes us back to the Edo period. Masanosuke Akitsu is a ronin, who despite being a gifted swordsman, is not very reliable because of his personality. His employers are also not very fond of him. Luckily, Masanosuke Akitsu is hired by a strange man named Yaichi as his bodyguard. However, his job is not as simple as it seems. He has to get involved in some illicit activities and meets with a gang named “Five Leaves”. Masanosuke is not liking where he’s going but he’s still curious about this group that knows no laws.

He’s also left alone because his family gets murdered except for his son, Daigorou. Ittou decides to become an assassin. There’s only one thing on his mind: Revenge. He’s wandering alone with his son in search of those who destroyed his life. He also started getting hired to assassinate people. That’s how the father and son got famous as the “Lone Wolf and Cub”

Afro Samurai is one of the most popular manga about samurai. We’re introduced to Afro who saw his father getting killed in a duel by a man named Justice before his eyes. Justice then wears the number one band and is promoted from number two. Many years pass and we see Afro with a number 2 band. Now, he has the right to challenge the one with the number 1 band. He then embarks on a journey to hunt down his father’s murderer, the number 1. Though he can only challenge number 1, everyone else can challenge him. There are endless hurdles in his way to reach the number 1. He must get rid of anyone who gets in his way of revenge.

Drifters takes us back to the 17th century where we witness the battle of Sekigahara. Toyohisa Shimuzu is critically wounded. He suddenly finds himself in a huge hall with loads of doors. There, he is pulled in one of the doors and finds himself in a world alien to him. The world is full of strange creatures and also a few people from Toyohisa’s world. Toyohisa comes across Nobunaga Oda and Yoichi Suketeka Nasu and befriends them. Toyohisa and his allies are named the “Drifters” and are responsible to fight off the “Ends”. Now, it’s Toyohisa’s group’s responsibility to save the brand new empire from the threats.

Dororo has undoubtedly one of the best storylines ever. The story is about a boy named Hyakkimaru who was sacrificed to the demons by his father, Lord Daigo. Lord Daigo was trying to save his dying land by sacrificing his son. Hyakkimaru was left limbless as soon as he was born. He was then told to be discarded. But the servant couldn’t kill the poor child and left him to survive.
Hyakkimaru is then found by a monk who gave him some prosthetics. He then decides to get back his limbs by fighting each demon who took them. One by one, he started defeating the demons and getting his body parts back. One day, he comes across a little boy named Dororo. Dororo accompanies him on his mission and the two wander alone.

Gintama’s way of portraying the samurai is very different. The manga is just hilarious. Gintama takes us to the Edo period where the country is invaded by some creatures named “Amanto”. The Shogunate are helpless before them and they decide to surrender. That leads to the disappearance of all the samurai from the country.
We’re introduced to Gintoki Sakata who is a samurai but instead of acting as a samurai, he does all sorts of odd jobs for people. He has his group of very strange individuals who do the work with him. Their everyday life is shown to us in this manga and trust me, it’s worth reading.

Manji, the hundred man killer, has a secret: he’s immortal. The reason behind him being immortal is that an eight hundred-year-old nun placed bloodworms inside his body that can heal any wound. Manji wants to atone for his sin of killing one hundred innocent men. He wishes to kill one thousand evil men in order to do that. The nun agrees and tells him that she will make him mortal once he’s done with his goal of killing one thousand evil men. Soon, Manji meets a girl named Rin who needed Manji’s help in hunting down those who killed her parents. Manji was reluctant at first but then agreed upon protecting Rin for four years. The two embark on a long and strenuous journey full of blood and pain.

Vagabond deserves all the praise it’s getting. It’s undoubtedly the best manga with the best artwork about the samurai. It takes us to 16th century Japan where we’re introduced to Shinmen Takezo, a rough and aggressive man. He along with his friend, Matahachi Honiden, decide to enlist in the Toyotomi army. However, they barely come back alive after the Tokugawa Clan crushes their army in the battle of Sekigahara.
Shinmen decides to return back home and is shocked to find himself as a wanted criminal there. He realized that he was framed for something he didn’t do. Will he be able to get out of this sticky situation? This one is a highly recommended manga. You won’t regret reading it!

Charlotte Just like Tokyo Revengers, Charlotte also involves the theme of time traveling. It also involves some High School stuff going on just like Tokyo Revengers. So, if you liked Tokyo Revengers, you’re definitely going to love watching Charlotte, too! Charlotte follows the story of some pre adolescent kids who start developing superhuman powers when a mysterious comet named Charlotte passes by Earth. Yuu Otosaka is our MC who develops the power of possessing anyone’s body for five seconds and wants to use it to live his school life as carefree as he can. However, he’s exposed by a girl named Nao Tomori. She forces him to transfer to the Houshinoumi Academy where the rest of the kids with superhuman powers are. Together, they search for their destiny as power wielders. 10. Black Lagoon Black Lagoon is an action-oriented anime with a bunch of delinquents/yakuza just like Tokyo Revengers. However, the yakuza in Black Lagoon are definitely on a whole other level of badass. So, if you’re into some action-filled anime, we definitely recommend you to watch this one! Black Lagoon tells us the story of Rokuro Okajima who’s an ordinary salaryman, carrying some important documents for the company. The ship he’s traveling in gets attacked by the pirates. He’s kidnapped by the mercenaries but his top priority is to keep the documents safe. He soon notices that the pirates are quite friendly and mean no harm to him. Now, with his life as a corporate slave ruined, he wishes to join the group of pirates and travel with them throughout the South China Sea. 9. ReLife ReLife features the concept of time traveling along with some lovey-dovey concept that is quite similar to Tokyo Revengers. You’d also notice the characters of both the anime giving the same vibes despite having different dynamics. Traveling back in time to fix one’s life by not repeating the same mistake is what’s similar in both ReLife and Tokyo Revengers. The story revolves around a 27-year-old guy named Kaizaki Arata, who’s hopeless in finding a job after quitting his former one. One day he meets Ryo Yoake who works at the ReLife Research Institute. Ryo possesses a drug that could transform Kaizaki into his 17-year-old self again to fix his past mistakes. Kaizaki agrees to use it and starts his life again as a high-schooler. 8. Great Teacher Onizuka Both Great Teacher Onizuka and Tokyo Revengers share the theme of High School Drama and involve some really nice yakuza action. However, Great Teacher Onizuka is definitely way more comedic than Tokyo Revengers. Our MC in Great Teacher Onizuka is a badass ex-biker gang leader who aspires to be a great high school teacher (How ironic!). However, he’s up to no good as his sole motive of getting into a high school as a teacher is just to find a pretty little teenage wife for him. He manages to get into the prestigious Holy Forest Academy but finds himself in a bit of a mess as his class is notorious for being rotten to the core. The students face issues every day and he is the one who solves them by using his life lessons. 7. Orange Orange is just another anime with time-traveling as its main theme. Although it does not involve any delinquents or yakuza, it is quite similar to Tokyo Revengers. Both involve some high school romance and the MCs wishing to fix their past mistakes to save their loved ones. We definitely recommend you to check it out if you loved watching Tokyo Revengers. Orange follows the story of Takamiya Naho who receives a detailed letter from herself 10 years in the future one day. Initially, she thinks that someone’s playing a prank on her because let’s be serious, how can a person even receive a letter from her own self from the future? Sounds ridiculous, right? However, Naho notices the things in the letter coming true and has no choice but to believe the miracle that’s happening to her. She has a group of friends which also includes a guy named Kakeru. Ikebukuro West Gate Park Both Ikebukuro West Gate Park and Tokyo Revengers revolve around the gang culture in Japan and its power dynamics. They show the struggles of different yakuza gangs possessing different power structures. They both share the same concept of protecting someone other than themselves! The story is about Makoto Majima who is a troubleshooter and often fixes disputes amongst the deadly yakuza that live in Ikebukuro. He’s Extremely capable and is able to do things that even the police can’t. Makoto ends up losing his loved one when things get out of hand. Will he keep his cool and deal with everything logically or go haywire? The answer lies in the anime! 5. Rainbow Another anime about delinquents and gangs, Rainbow tells us the story of some bad boys that are also sad boys! Rainbow and Tokyo revengers are quite similar because of the concept of yakuza bonding and deeply analyzing why they turn out to be like that. Rainbow tells us the story of a bunch of teenagers who have been shifted to Shounan Special Reform School because of some crimes they committed. They meet an older inmate, Rokurouta Sakuragi, who was a former boxer in their cell and all of them become close to him. The boys saw a light of hope and promised each other that they’ll meet again outside after serving their sentences. 4. Shounan Bakusozouku This anime features a theme of gang culture and mixes it up with the high school drama which gives it an interesting edge! We see the concept of gang culture portrayed beautifully in this anime just like Tokyo Revengers. Shounan Bakusozouku is about a high school gang leader who’s a biker as well as a member of his school’s handicrafts club (How ironic!). We find our MC very weird because he constantly juggles between being a badass biker and a total cutie with his handicrafts. The rest of his gang is equally weird! 3. Steins; Gate Steins; Gate incorporates the theme of time travel and is very similar to Tokyo Revengers. However, we don’t see any gangs or yakuza in Steins; Gate. Our MC, unlike the MC of Tokyo Revengers, is a weird scientist. Both the anime involve going back in time to save their loved ones. This anime revolves around a mad scientist named Rintarou Okabe along with his team members, Mayuri Shiina and Hashida Itaru who are constantly working on some “Future Gadgets”. They manage to create a bizarre “Phone Microwave” that can send Emails to the past, changing the past completely. 2. Kokou Botuden Crows Kokou Botuden Crows revolve around high school gangs and delinquents and their strong bonds with each other. If you liked Tokyo Revengers, you’re definitely going to love this one! The story is about Bouya Harumichi who got transferred to an all-boys high school. That high school is a haven for some of the most dangerous delinquents. The high school is named “Crows High School” because the students get a lot of hate from normal people because of their inauspiciousness. Hamachi has the potential of becoming a badass delinquent. But will he really join hands with the delinquents and get all the hate from the people around him? 1. Erased Just like the MC of Tokyo Revengers, our MC from Erased becomes his younger self to save his loved one. Both anime share the concept of time traveling as well as changing the course of things so that they could fix what they’ve ruined. Erased follows the story of Satoru Fujinuma who’s a reclusive part-timer with no ambitions. However, he has the power of going back in time and avoiding accidents or deaths (Such a convenient power!). Satoru lives with a constant childhood trauma that he would like to forget. The only way is to go back in the past and fix things so that he could live his life without any guilt. Will he trust his ability and go back in time to fix things? Conclusion Tokyo Revengers is definitely worth all the grace it’s getting. The plot follows Ryuuichi Kashima and his little brother Kotarou. After losing both their parents in a plane crash, Ryuuichi now joins the babysitter club in exchange for the chairwoman of Morinomiya Academy to let them live with her for free and enroll Ryuuichi in the school without pay. This series just doesn’t involve babies, but it features a story of two brothers slowly adapting to a new environment without a family, but slowly they start to realize that they will never be alone. Horimiya You might be wondering why Horimiya is on the list, but hold your horses and hear me out. Horimiya has some similarities to Gakuen Babysitters especially in how episodes progress. The story progresses in a manner that cannot be easily realized by the viewer. Another thing that Horimiya has that is the same with Gakuen Babysitters is how they portray the Slice of Life and Comedy genre realistically. It has characters that have similar characteristics to Gakuen Babysitters as well. Similar to Ryuuichi, Miyamura (the male main character) started to understand that no one can be alone, as he meets friends and eventually finds the love of his life. Horimiya is a Slice of Life, RomCom anime that features Izumi Miyamura, a timid and shy student who was alone for most of his life and was constantly bullied, and Kyouko Hori who is an independent and determined high school girl. As the days go by and they start to know each other, love eventually blossoms between the two, and a new world is opened up for Miyamura Izumi. Not only that, their comedic antics are closely similar to the series as well but it lacks the wholesomeness that encapsulates Gakuen Babysitters. Himouto! Umaru-chan is a pure comedic slice of life anime that offers little drama but packs a punch with its jokes and hilarious scenes. The series revolves around Umaru Doma who is a perfect high school student but once she gets home and wears her hamster hoodie, she becomes this lazy otaku that just does whatever she likes, leaving her brother, Taihei all the household chores. Tamako Market We had high schoolers who were as dumb as a baby, we had an otaku who looks like a baby, but now we get－a talking bird! Yes. A talking bird who’s addicted to mochi. One thing for sure that makes Tamako Market have similarities with Gakuen Babysitters is that it is Slice of Life anime through and through. It features the everyday life of Tamako Kitashirakawa, just like in Gakuen Babysitters where the story revolves around the daily life of Ryuuichi inside the daycare. But instead of daycare, we have a market and instead of babies, you have a bird who has a bigger ego than that one guy who just got a raise. Tamako Market also has the wholesomeness and subtle comedy and romance in Gakuen Babysitters. As I’ve said Tamako Market revolves around the life of Tamako and the market where everyone knows everyone. Tamako belongs to a family of mochi bakers. On a fateful day, she finds Dera Mochimazzi, a bird who proclaims that he is royalty from a distant land and is in search of a bride for his nation’s prince. But Dera takes on an unusual addiction to Mochi, becomes overweight, and can no longer return to his homeland. He lives in Tamako’s house and becomes the mascot. There is also a little romance involved as Tamako’s childhood friend Mochizou continues to hide his feelings from her. 12. K-On! What goes well with wholesomeness? Music and a Tea Party! K-On! is another wholesome slice of life anime that is set in a Japanese high school. But instead of daycare or your typical high school student, K-On! features the four (and then five) high school girls that reside within the Light Music Club. The series shows their day-to-day life just like in Gakuen Babysitters but adds a little uniqueness with their songs and performances. It also has comedy, a little bit of drama that can be found in high school, as well as their journey to achieve their dream. The band name is “Afterschool Tea Time”. The band members include The forgetful main character Yui Hirasawa who plays the guitar and is the lead vocalist; The energetic Ritsu Tainaka who plays the drums; The shy Mio Akiyama, the second vocalist, and bassist; The wealthy and naive Tsugumi Kotobuki who plays the keyboard and; a member who will arrive at the later part of the series, Azusa Nakano who also plays the guitar. Nichijou Nichijou is one of the funniest and wackiest slice of life anime you will ever see in your life. Nichijou - My Ordinary Life is literally about the life of the 6 main characters where again one is a robot, one is a talking cat, and also adds a young genius into the mix. Gakuen Babysitters have a more realistic slice of life but Nichijou is like Gakuen Babysitters but drinks coffee 3 times a day. It’s also set in a high school setting just like in Gakuen Babysitters but lacks the emotional drama as it's a full-blown slapstick comedy. Nichijou is the anime series that took all of Gakuen Babysitters' comedy and put them in a high school setting. It’s like a series out of all the imaginations of the babies in the daycare in Gakuen Babysitters. Maybe this is what Usaida is dreaming about. 10. Chibi☆Devi! We finally have babies! Well…devil babies. Chibi☆Devi! is a series that just like Gakuen Babysitters tackles the hardships of taking care of babies but this series just has a “devilish” twist in it. It features the activities that can be found in Gakuen Babysitters such as nap-time and story-time. One thing that sets this apart from Gakuen Babysitters, however, is that the series is geared towards much younger audiences so you won’t find the emotional drama, and the comedy is built for those at a young age. The series is focused on Honoka Sawada who doesn’t believe in devils and such but one day a devil baby named Mao was dropped into her room while she was asleep and is now enlisting the help of Shin Sugisaki to help her in dealing with the unusual circumstances. 9. My Roommate is a Cat From a talking bird to devil babies and back to an ordinary cat. This may seem like a downgrade but keep reading, this series has a lot more in common with Gakuen Babysitters than you thought. It perfectly re-enacts the situation Ryuuichi and Kotarou are in where their parents died in an accident leaving them alone. But in My Roommate is a Cat, the main character is living in solitude until he meets Haru, a grey cat he decided to take care of. He is similar to Ryuuichi because he is put in a situation where he must take care of someone/something other than himself. Although, instead of being like Ryuuichi who is responsible, Subaru can’t even seem to take care of himself. The similarities don’t stop there, after his fateful meeting with Haru, Subaru is now being acquainted with more and more people and is slowly leaving his introverted life. My Roommate is a Cat that builds up an entire story from the “stray gets picked up from the streets” cliche in other anime series and that itself is amazing. It’s heartwarming and also involves funny scenes. Even though Haru has a backstory, the series makes sure that you get to know and fall in love with the characters. 8. Poco’s Udon World Just by looking at the picture you can tell that even in the art style, Poco’s Udon World and Gakuen Babysitters are starting to look alike. But only do they look alike but there are also similarities in their plot and concept. Poco’s Udon World is more intertwined with fantasy while Gakuen Babysitter is telling their story from a more realistic perspective. I mean Poco’s Udon World has a shapeshifting Tanuki. The main characters of the two series also lost both their parents. Poco’s Udon World also has that wholesome tone to it and also talks about the past of the main character, Souta Tawara. There are also similarities in how the supporting characters act and their main characteristics. The storytelling is also similar to Gakuen Babysitter where there is no definitive storyline, the series is just taking us through the daily life of the characters. So, if you’re not into talking birds and cats, maybe you’re more into a shapeshifting Tanuki named Poco. 7. Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge This anime is if you imagined Usaida and Ryuuichi changed attitudes. I guess this is what Usaida’s dreams must be about. Also called Tanaka-kun is Always Listless in English it revolves around the main character Tanaka, who doesn’t want to exert energy, and his dependable friend Oota (blonde Usaida) as they encounter extraordinary events while living their high school lives. It’s a slice-of-life comedy anime that focuses on the dream of the main character to live a peaceful and quiet life. It also has a pretty unique art style. The similarities it has with Gakuen Babysitters lie in the basic concept of Tanaka’s daily life. While being the opposite of the responsible Ryuuichi, both series focus on the daily life of the characters and the unusual situations that happen in them. Its style of comedy is also similar to Gakuen Babysitters as well as its list of characters. 6. Sweetness & Lightning We finally reached it! If you’re the one who just scrolled all the way here to find an anime that involves taking care of a real baby, you’ve done it! The anime focuses on the life of Kouhei Inuzaka who is taking care of his daughter Tsumugi after his wife passed away. Because of his busy life and his inability to cook, he usually feeds both of them food from the convenience store. He takes up an offer from his student Kotori, and he and Tsumugi eat and cook together with Kotori. In terms of similarity with Gakuen Babysitters, first off, they both stick to the realistic manner of portraying the slice of life genre. How to Keep a Mummy Look at that mummy! Who in this world would not think that that’s not cute? And there’s more where that came from. How to Keep a Mummy essentially replaced the babies in Gakuen Babysitters with unique cute pets. The story is all about a high school student named Sora Kashiwagi who receives bizarre gifts from his father who travels the world. When he receives a present that came from Egypt he’s shocked to find a little mummy named Mii-kun. As they go along with their lives they start to meet other people with extraordinary pets. This is essentially Gakuen Babysitters if it were set in Night at the Museum. Both series are cute and wholesome. You can’t help but smile at their antics and their amusing everyday lives. Who wouldn’t enjoy that heartwarming tea-cup size cuteness overload? 4. Bunny Drop Bunny Drop is similar to Sweetness & Lightning but instead of the main character being a single father he is now a 30-year old bachelor who just goes with the flow. The story begins when Daikichi Kawachi was paying his respects to his grandfather. He meets a shy girl named Rin Kaga who is being rejected by Daickihi’s grandfather’s relatives after his death as they think she is a shame to the family as she was shockingly his Daikichi’s grandfather’s illegitimate daughter. Furious, Daikichi decides to take Rin as his own and so his journey to fatherhood starts. Bunny Drop has close ties with Gakuen Babysitters especially in how the series’ main characters try to discover and rediscover the warmth and kindness of a close-knit family. Bunny Drop includes wholesome scenes. The series is rare in the anime world because it deals with a subject that is often taken seriously. This slice of life anime will surely make you smile and maybe make you shed a tear or two. 3. Barakamon Barakamon is not about taking care of children but it’s about discovering yourself while being in contact with one. The plot of Barakamon is centered on Seishu Handa who is a narcissistic and talented calligrapher who was exiled to the Goto Islands after losing his cool when his work was called unoriginal. He meets his wacky neighbors who keep barging into his home, one of which is Naru Kotoishi, a very annoying child. While in exile and always being kept busy by his neighbors, he starts to learn new things that began to change his view on so many things in life. Gakuen Babysitters primarily focuses on antics as well as having subtle emotional scenes such as the case with Barakamon. But Barakamon tends to focus on one of Seishu’s views on life instead of his situation. It has similarities with the comedic scenes in Gakuen Babysitters as well as the way it portrays a slice of life. Maybe by watching this anime, you can learn something that will change your perspective about the world. 2. Baby and Me You may be thinking, what’s an anime that premiered in 1996 doing here? Well, because it is one of the most similar anime to Gakuen Babysitters of course! Maybe even its grandfather or something. Such as I said it's similar to Gakuen Babysitters because the mother of the main character, Takuya Enoki’s mother passed away and now he must sacrifice his childhood, even as a 5th grader to take care of his little brother as his father is busy working as your typical Japanese salaryman. Takuya’s situation is almost the same as Ryuuichi as they both try their best to find the true meaning of family. Baby and Me is essentially a drama-comedy anime. It portrays a situation that happens in real life and the story is beautiful on its own. It may be old but it sure is worth watching. 1. Hanamaru Youchien Hanamaru Youchien or Hanamaru Kindergarten is the closest anime just like Gakuen Babysitters. The main character might not have the same family situation just like Ryuuichi but the scenarios, comedy, and slice of life elements of the two series are like twins. Hanamaru Youchien also has that subtle romance where the main character, Naozumi Tsuchida is in love with Nanako Yamamoto who supervises the class next door. Its structure of events is also similar to Gakuen Babysitters. The show is as wholesome as it gets pretty funny because it’s one of the few anime where a big part of the story is where Anzu, a kindergartener fell in love with Naozumi. The series is relaxing, fun, and just all-around laid-back. It’s a must-watch if you liked Gakuen Babysitters.
