The protagonist is Mikan, a simple and clumsy girl, who lives in the countryside together with her grandpa. However, one day, her best friend, Hotaru, is suddenly transferred to another school in Tokyo. Mikan misses her deeply, so she decides to visit her, running away from home.

When the girl arrives at the gates of the school, she discovers that Hotaru is in a school for Alice, that means children with particular talents, but she is forbidden to enter the school. However, one of the teachers notices a particular talent in Mikan and offers her the opportunity to take the school entrance test.
