Zoro Pre-Time Skip And What Changes Occured Post Time-Skip
Zoro’s unflinchingly daunt spirit combined with his lust for strength ranks him as one of the greatest characters in all of anime. Zoro’s loyalty for his Nakama, his quirky personality, and ability to finesse his way out of the toughest of situations gives him further reason to be a fan favorite. Zoro goes from sipping on sake and dozing off on a weekend to showing ridiculous amounts of will with just a glare.
Pre-time skip Zoro had been known to be just as fierce as he is Post-time skip With great improvements in not only his physical strength but also his appearance. The Strawhats went through drastic changes during the 2-year long time skip, with Zoro now having his left eye scarred and completely shut, there’s no reference given to what could’ve happened. Leading up to the time skip a series of events took place. During the Sabaody Archipelago arc, the Strawhats were met with misfortune in the form of Bartholomew Kuma, who was responsible for dispersing the crew.
In the aftermath of the disbandment of the crew, Zoro was found to be sent to Kuraigana Island where Mihawk resided. The island turned out to be the home of Mihawk, who upon returning to the castle informed Zoro of the events at Marineford. Zoro went under Mihawk’s training, getting his Scar at this time. Fans started speculating and theorizing, causing an uproar among the fandom. Post-time skip, One Piece has left a whole lot more questions than answers. Zoro’s prowess, his sheer willpower, and his mystique have left fans wondering what really happened to Zoro’s eye?
Zoro's Scar-What Does It Mean And How Did He Get It?
With Oda yet to give any hints or clues on what might’ve happened, fan theories are still on a rise. Popular theories among the Fandom suggest Zoro’s eye to be reminiscent of the Uchiha Clan’s Sharingans and Rinnegan, or a mystical being sealed in his eye, maybe Asura? or just a simple scar he got from battling it out with the Feral Baboons. These may depict typical shounen tropes but fail to display an Oda-esque style.
The theory that holds more weight in being the most Oda-esque renders Zoro as having Ocular Dominance.
The theory that holds more weight in being the most Oda-esque renders Zoro as having Occular Dominance. Which has the effect of one of the eye’s being more dominant than the other, in Zoro’s case, his left eye. At the time of his training with Mihawk, Mihawk recognized Zoro’s inept right eye for lacking depth perception and positioning as compared to his left eye. His left eye appears more “dominant” than the right.
Under Hawk eyes subordinacy, his final adversary, it was made to be that Zoro was only to use his right eye thus making it more dominant and sharper. For when the time comes that Zoro opens his left eye with far superior vision, rendering him able to show even greater feats of strength.
Considering how Oda loves to subtly use hints and foreshadowing to make his grand reveals, this theory prevails in making the most sense. Taking into account one of Zoro’s main quirks, having a bad sense of direction, the theory quickly starts relating to how Oda tends to tie stuff together. Depth perception and navigation are both somewhat correlated.
Thus proven not to be a distant stretch(pun intended). After all, If it weren’t for Zoro’s botched GPS system he would never have managed to stray lost to the Shimotsuki village dojo and later end up as the right hand to the Future Pirate King.
One-piece and its vast world of endless mysteries is what keeps us wondering and on the edge of our seats. The mystery of Zoro’s upbringing? Who are his parents? All of these questions are yet to be answered. And knowing Oda never fails to disappoint makes us the readers even more excited!
I have my bet on those damn baboons. I’m pretty sure they gave him that scar..
