27+ Best Thriller Anime That You want to watch!

Thriller anime

Are you ready to get into the spooky season? No? Don’t worry, I will make you. Today, we present you with a blog about the Top 28 Best Thriller Anime.

Before I begin, this list is not factual in the least. It’s all based on my opinion, so please don’t take it seriously. The series I that I will soon mention are all fantastic watches, with or without their thrilling rank.

At the end of the blog, I included a few more show suggestions, so if you didn’t click with any of these ranked anime, you’ve got a backup.

Another is an anime that should be in this blog because of its horror and gore elements, but I chose not to put it on the list. Why? Well, because Another is in a lot of my other blogs!

I want to give you different anime to watch, so I have to be mindful about my lists being repetitive. If I had to give Another a rank, it would tie with #9 When They Cry.

Anyway, let’s start talking about the anime I did rank! Let’s get to it!

Anime Storyline:

Selector Infected WIXOSS is twelve series anime series that aired in 2014. It’s not as established as I thought it would be—which always makes me sad to hear. It’s about Ruuko Kominato who gets a deck of cards—and no, she isn’t playing poker with that pack.

This dark of cards is for this famed game called WIXOSS. It sounds chill, right? Totally normal—except minus the real girl inside Ruuko’s avatar card or the game granting the winner wishes.

Anime Storyline:

Btooom is a fantastic anime that is quite thrilling. However, I just didn’t like a few of its characters. Some of them were too one dimensional or too predictable to my liking. Also, I’m pretty salty about it only having one season.

Btooom is about Ryota Sakamoto and Himiko’s journey in a deadly battle. After he was invited to play an IRL version of his favorite game, he finds himself trapped on a random, unknown island in which he must fight for his life.

Basically, Btooom is a Sword Art Online version of Hunger Games. Its plot is wonderful!

Anime Storyline:

Why does every recommendation video I watch imply Angels of Death is a romance anime? The assumed female lead is thirteen years old. The only thing she’s in love with is (TRIGGER WARNING: SELF-HARM) her own death.

Rachel, one of our main characters, is a little girl who wakes up in the basement of a building. Now, this isn’t just any building—it’s an abandoned one.

Also, did I forget to add that she is trapped in this basement? Plus, she doesn’t have any memory of her past, let alone how she got there.

As Rachel walks around the mysterious setting, she stumbles across a serial killer. This chick is really having a rough day.

But you know what Rachel decides to do. She forms an agreement with Zack the murderer. If Zack helps her escape this creepy building, he can kill her.

Before you lose it, as I did, Rachel is diagnosed with mental delirium. So, no. She isn’t in her right state of mind.

(I know, deep down, that the studio could have done a lot better with the last few episodes. I’m just a mean person.)

Genre: Drama, Fantasy

Anime Storyline:

Wonder Egg Priority is a fairly recent anime. It was released on January 13th in 2021! Bro, their advertisement and marketing fooled me.

I thought this was going to be a warm-hearted story about a little girl hatching her egg. Maybe it was my fault for looking at the posters instead of watching the trailer. Oh well. What’s done is done.

The main character of Wonder Egg Priority is the oh-so-adorable Ai Ohto. She lost her only friend to suicide, and her reaction was more realistic than I had expected.

I try to be as humorous as possible when writing these blogs, but please allow me to withdraw from using a silly tone for this anime.

I’ve lost a close family member to suicide when I was a kid. I wasn’t overwhelmed with emotions all at once. It was more of gradual grief that kept getting thicker with time. We see this reaction in Ai as she struggles with her trauma.

One day, she takes a late-night walk and comes across a Wonder Egg—this is when her black and white life starts to gain a bit of color. However, it’s not always for the best.

I don’t have an appropriate transition from the previous anime description to this one, so let’s pretend I made a great one.

Hellsing Ultimate is about a crazy, off-the-rocker vampire that goes by the name of Alucard. He and Seras Victoria embark on missions to protect England from an even crazier guy named SS Major.

SS major has a vampire army, and boy, I’m glad I’m not against them. What’s SS Major’s goal?

Eternal war. Why can’t everyone just be friends with each other?

Anime Storyline:

ARE YOU KIDDING?! HOW DARE YOU PUT THE PROMISED NEVERLAND SO LOW ON THIS BLOG?! Well, the second season sucked

It was so bad. Listen, it’s hard to keep the ball rolling if the first season was perfect. I get it. But I read the manga before I watched the anime. I’m very thankful for everyone on the animation team, however, I wished they didn’t skip most of TPN’s fantastic arcs.

The Promised Neverland is about three best friends who live together with other kids in one house. This house only has one adult, whom the children call Mama

The children of this isolated orphanage in the middle of nowhere are content. They do their chores diligently and are tested on their intelligence constantly. No biggie.

One of the three best friends, Emma, gets a bit too curious for her own good.

Anime Storyline:

I love Danganronpa. Please don’t get me wrong. It’s a very mysterious anime. However, I didn’t vibe with the art style. It’s unique, but in my humble opinion, it didn’t match the theme of the story.

For example, why is blood shown as different colors? I’m old-fashioned, so when I see blood, I associate it with red. Not purple. That alone lowered the score of the anime.

Perhaps I’m too mean. I’m sorry.  Though, the video game is a lot more thrilling, to be honest.

Genre: Avant Garde, Drama, Mystery, Supernatural, Suspense

Anime Storyline:

Paranoia Agent was from the start disturbing to me. It reminded me of my favorite children’s show: The Teletubbies. I’m actually going to hurl.

Fun fact: Paranoia Agent is banned in Japan because it is labeled unfit for public broadcasting. That’s why I’m hesitating on putting this on a higher rank.

It’s about Tokyo being overwhelmed by a phenomenon of street assaults—and the suspect is a little boy that’s known as Lil’ Slugger

No one knows Lil’ Slugger’s face, but they remember three things about him: he wears a baseball cap, roller skates, and a bent baseball bat.

Anime Storyline:

The gore in this anime is amazing. The suspense is fantastic. However, like TPN, the anime did not ring true to its manga. It’s still a great series.

Kaneki Ken is a university student who lives in a world of ghouls. He falls for a gorgeous girl that frequently visits a coffee shop. Timid guy crushes on a mysterious beautiful woman. That doesn’t sound like anything too out of the blue, right?

One day, he musters the courage to talk to her. The guy’s killing it! He even escorts her back to the train.  It’s all nice and innocent until this beauty wants him. Not as a lover, but as supper.

I’m going to give you a heads up, this can be a tricky plot to follow. It’s about Akira Takizawa who has no recollection of his past. He wakes up in front of the White House. Naked of course.

All he has on him is a gun and a phone. On this phone, there are 8.2 billion yen. Doesn’t he sound sketchy? Hold on, he gets even more suspicious.

Akira is somehow connected to missiles that terrorized Japan in 2010.

WHAT?! Moriarty the Patriot is not ranked number one?! How could I? Hear me out, I get your frustration. I’m disappointed in myself too. Although Moriarty the Patriot is a thriller, it’s more of a Mystery anime.

Sure, there’s some top-notch gore in this series. However, the rest of the anime on this blog is a bit more thrilling in a gory sense. I know, I’m horrendous.

Moriarty the Patriot is about a genius detective, you may have heard of him—the ever so famous Sherlock Holmes. Poor dude is at his wit’s end trying to one-up the Lord of Crime

This is a prime example of watchers rooting for the antagonist rather than the protagonist.

Mima is part of a J-pop group called CHAM!, and it was popular for about two years. However, despite the fame Mima has received, she decides to quit the group because she has greater things planned. Mima wants to become an actress.

She successfully gets a role in a crime series, but soon realizes how acting takes a toll on stamina. Also, Mima notices that CHAM! is doing just fine without her. Not only that, but she has a creepy, dedicated stalker.

Which are you most Excited to Watch?

solo levelling

Are we already finished?! What?! That was so quick! Before I leave you with this blog, I want to add a couple of notable mentions: Made in Abyss, FullMetal Alchemist, and The Ancient Magus’ Bride.

By their respective order, they are classified as the top three that are tied with the three other anime I mentioned above.

It would be unfair to rank them any differently. However, there are characters in these series that have made me actually throw up in pure shock and horror.

For Instance, Mitty becoming a bob in Made in Abyss. I’m the eldest sister in my family, and Mitty was just a little girl. I want to hug and comfort her; I want to read fairy tales to her at night. It’s not fair. It’s not fair. It’s not fair.

Made in Abyss, FullMetal Alchemist, and The Ancient Magus’ Bride are dangerous anime for someone like me. I’m too sensitive and emotional to watch the cruelty inflicted upon such innocent people—especially with children.

This is another anime that had me fooled. For years, I thought this was the Chibi version of Sailor Moon. News Flash, it’s not.

This is one dark series, and I am warning you, do not take this plot lightly because in the end, you will be devastated

I’m not going to give you a vague description. If I do, you won’t take this anime seriously. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magic is about a fourteen-year-old girl named Madoka Kaname who walks down a slippery slope of power after encountering Kyube— a magical creature.
