26. Blue Exorcist

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
4/10
10/20
5/10
19/40

Genre: Shounen, Fantasy, Supernatural
Episodes: 37

Anime Storyline:

Blue Exorcist is a stunning, suspenseful religious-like anime, with darker scenes than the typical Anime you might watch.

Blue Exorcist’s plot is immaculately written and made to keep you curious, but also to keep things interesting. After all, a boring Anime can’t be watched for THAT long, right?

The Supernatural theme overall in this series is VERY present and excellently executed. With religious aspects, humor still added to make it a little more fun, and demons and exorcism everywhere, this is one of the best parts of the show.

And this show, though blunt at first, has many twists and scenes you definitely wouldn’t expect, and it honestly just makes this a great show.

25. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
7/10
10/20
3/10
20/40

Genre: Drama, Seinen, Supernatural
Episodes: 48 (4 Seasons)

Anime Storyline:

One of the more popular Anime out there, Tokyo Ghoul is just… stunning. One of my favorites, and I gotta say, Kaneki Ken (Our protagonist) isn’t bad looking himself.

The plot is amazing, following Kaneki Ken on his so-called “ordinary life” He and his best friend have exciting adventures, fun scenes, and sometimes make stupid mistakes.

This show is nearly nothing but supernatural, as it’s filled with human-like creatures named ghouls, who can only feed on human flesh. And you can only imagine how THAT might turn out.

The Plot twists… Now this is where things get interesting. A major plot twist takes place right in the first episode of the series, and I’m telling you, you’re not gonna see this one coming.

24. Clannad

Clannad
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
4/20
6/10
20/40

Genre: Slice Of Life, RomCom, Supernatural
Episodes: 47 (2 Seasons)

Anime Storyline:

Clannad is a beautiful, stunning supernatural Anime that might not be what you expect.

The plot follows hilarious main characters, and a gorgeous setting. Clannad is also mysterious, and alongside being lighthearted, it can also be pretty deep.

The supernatural elements come in with fortune telling, as well as superhuman abilities, and it’s pretty funny at the start. That is, until you realize the full merit of this series, and it’s actually so spectacularly written and well thought-out.

The Plot twists appear very unexpectedly in this series (as they should) and I can’t believe I didn’t see some of them coming!

23. Angel Beats!

Angel beats
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
5/10
10/20
5/10
20/40

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Supernatural
Episodes: 13

Anime Storyline:

A fun, yet filled with curiosity and questions, series that you definitely won’t regret watching.

Angel Beats’ plot is filled with mystery, and you’d never be able to predict what happens next. It’s a fun take on what the afterlife could be like, and I honestly must applaud the writers for an amazing plotline.

The supernatural part of this series is one word – amazing. I can’t believe how well thought out it is, how much thought was put into the whole effect and it’s honestly just remarkable.

Now for the plot twists. Here, they might not appear that often, but when they do, it’s more than worth it.

22. Fruits Basket

Fruits Basket
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
4/10
12/20
6/10
22/40

Genre: RomCom, Slice Of Life, Supernatural
Episodes: 63 (3 Seasons)

Anime Storyline:

A typical nineties anime, with big (and I mean BIG) anime eyes, short skirts and the uniquely illustrated hairstyles, Fruits Basket is one of the more humorous Supernatural Anime.

The Plot, following a girl named Tohru Honda, our protagonist, on her so-called “adventures.” Her mother passed a while before her and the series starts in an accident, but things definitely look up after that.

As for the supernatural elements, these appear when you least expect it, and it’s done stunningly, with the supernatural fitting right into the ordinary realm around them.

And with plot twists… I don’t want to spoil, but you should know that if you decide to watch Fruits Basket, you’re in for a HUGE surprise. (Or two)

21. Dance In the Vampire Bund

Dance in the Vampire Bund
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
6/10
12/20
4/10
22/40

Genre: Action, Drama, Supernatural
Episodes: 12

Anime Storyline:

An awesome Vampire Supernatural Anime that stands out from the typical “Vampire Stories” that you would expect.

The Plot is mysterious and very immersive, yet still has a consistency with each episode, along with the occasional humor here and there.

The supernatural elements here are pretty obvious, vampires, blood-sucking, classic supernatural themes.

The plot twists might not happen as often, but when they do, it’s amazing.

20. Witch Hunter Robin

Witch Hunter Robin
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
10/20
4/10
24/40

Genre: Action, Mystery, Supernatural
Episodes: 26

Anime Storyline:

A well-illustrated, amazingly written anime series with hot guys. I mean, what’s not to love?

The Plot of Witch Hunter Robin has an immersing plot about a witch hunter (as the title says) and is entirely unique compared to the other anime on this list.

The Supernatural Elements in the series revolve around humans, or Witches, with supernatural powers, that are impossibly powerful.

The plot twists here are slightly scarcer, but still present at some points in the series.

19. Ghost Stories

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
9/10
10/20
6/10
25/40

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Supernatural
Episodes: 19

Anime Storyline:

Ghost Stories is a fun, sometimes mysterious, but overall, casually fun supernatural anime.

The Plot is amazingly written and I’m a huge fan of this series. The characters are loveable, the humor is genius, and I cannot tell you how fun it is to watch.

The Supernatural elements all come in from different directions, but mostly from the title of the series, Ghost Stories.

The plot twists here appear more often than in the previous two, and they’re not any less awesome. If anything, they could easily be even better.

18. Mokke

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
8/10
10/20
7/10
25/40

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Supernatural
Episodes: 19

Anime Storyline:

Upon seeing the series at first, I didn’t expect much, but oh BOY was I wrong.

The plot is amazing, with the supernatural element worked into it perfectly, and this is the first series of all of these where they didn’t kill off anybody just for dramatic effect.

The Supernatural part of this series is my absolute favorite part. It makes you curious as to what happens next, and makes you want to know more. As you figure out how everything fits, it all slowly gets clear.

The plot twists are strategically added, and I can’t even say that I saw them coming at first. Mokke, with all these aspects, truly is a masterpiece.

17. Overlord

overlord
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
10/20
7/10
27/40

Genre: Adventure, Fantasy, Supernatural
Episodes: 39 (3 Seasons so far)

Anime Storyline:

Overlord is a series about video games, yet it’s so much more than that.

The plot of Overlord is just awesome! It’s about a highly immersive fantasy video game that blew up in Japan with its realistic graphics and its amazing fantasy world that was created.

Yggdrasil was the name of the videogame, and twelve years later, the game was finally coming to an end. And this is where the story starts.

The supernatural element is different from the rest, as it’s more about videogame fantasy and extraterrestrial creatures.

The plot twists range from being around every corner, to barely even appearing. This perfect balance makes the show even better!

16. Rental Magica

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
9/10
11/20
8/10
28/40

Genre: Mystery, Fantasy, Supernatural
Episodes: 24

Anime Storyline:

Rental Magica might not be exactly what you’d expect, and I have to say, the surprise I got from this series wasn’t bad, not bad at all.

The Plot is greatly written and designed in a way to keep you curious, but still keeping you informed. In some ways it’s contrasting, but it works somehow.

The Supernatural elements of this series come in different ways, as there’s an “other world” that the characters talk about, and that’s the cause of the supernatural creatures in the series.

The Plot twists, once again, aren’t much, but they ARE still pretty well-done when they do appear. It’s like they say, “Quality over quantity”

15. When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
10/20
9/10
29/40

Genre: Harem, Slice Of Life, Supernatural
Episodes: 12

Anime Storyline:

When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace (whew, long title) is a fun, lighthearted series that no one would regret watching.

For the plot, I have to say, I’m honestly stunned. I can’t believe how someone managed to create a series that’s suspenseful, but still stays casual and light.

The Supernatural element here is just as unexpected to the characters as it is to us, and it just makes it that much better.

The plot twists come along with the supernatural parts, and they surprise you when you’d least expect it.

14. Bakemonogatari

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
8/10
13/20
8/10
29/40

Genre: Mystery, Fantasy, Supernatural
Episodes: 8 Seasons

Anime Storyline:

Bakemonogatari, a fun and suspenseful anime with some of the hottest characters you’ll find.

The Plot starts out in a way you DEFINITELY won’t see coming, and that’s what makes it great.

The supernatural elements come in more through the characters, and less from creatures or objects. But that doesn’t mean that these aspects are entirely lacking, though.

The plot twists here also take a while to appear, but when they do, they’ll make you feel like a Baka for not seeing it coming.

13. Charlotte

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
11/20
8/10
29/40

Genre: Drama, School, Super Power
Episodes: 13

Anime Storyline:

Charlotte has a deep, immersing storyline that pulls you in right as you start watching.

The Plot follows a very intellectual main character, who has the ability to possess people. With the occasional humor, the plot is extremely well-done, and I personally applaud the creators.

The supernatural elements, of course, come in with the protagonist who has the unique superhuman ability to possess people. But he couldn’t use his power for lots of things as each had its own drawback. Because of this, he chooses to use his powers for… cheating on tests.

The plot twists appear everywhere, though they’re pretty minor. Nonetheless, they make the series much more enjoyable and fun.

12. Code Geass

Code Geass
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
12/20
7/10
29/40

Genre: Action, Mecha, Sci-Fi
Episodes: 50 (2 Seasons)

Anime Storyline:

As one of the best supernatural anime out there, Code Geass more than deserves its spot on my amazing ranking.

The Plot, strangely similar to The Hunger Games franchise, is amazingly written and stunningly done. With a huge fan base all around the world, I can’t say that Code Geass has anything near a bad plot.

The supernatural elements in this series are profoundly incorporated into the overall plot, making it fun to watch, intense and still relatively easy to understand without straining yourself.

The plot twists truly do twist the plot in this series, and, like they should, appear right in your face when you least expect it.

11. Nekomonogatari

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
9/10
13/20
8/10
30/40

Genre: Comedy, Supernatural, Ecchi
Episodes: 4

Anime Storyline:

Another installation of the Monogatari series, this one, however, might actually be even better.

Nekomonogatari’s plot is much lighter and less intense than Bakemonogatari, and even though it has much less episodes, it’s still incredibly enjoyable and can get a chuckle out of just about anyone.

The Supernatural elements are basically the same as in Bakemonogatari, as they are both part of the same series, but here it’s just slightly more elaborated.

The Plot twists appear like jumpscares in FNAF, and could either make you scream or chuckle. (Or both)

10. Rewrite

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
9/10
12/20
10/10
31/40

Genre: Romcom, Supernatural, Action
Episodes: 24

Anime Storyline:

A story about a boy who basically wants to rewrite his life (see what I did there) and catch up on all the time he’s lost.

The Plot is profoundly detailed and well thought-out as well as written, making it a breathtaking series. And not to mention how gorgeous the art style is.

The Supernatural elements come in with a mysterious girl who keeps appearing at different times in the series, making all of us curious as to who she can be, as her identity and voice is only later revealed.

The Plot twists appear regularly and when they hit you, they hit you hard, there’s no denying that.

9. Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
8/10
17/20
8/10
33/40

Genre: Fantasy, Shounen, Action
Episodes: 323 (3 Seasons)

Anime Storyline:

An amazeballs Anime take on the typical Fairy Tales, Fairy Tail is truly an amazing series.

The Plot is very near genius, and the show is a fan-favorite. With good-looking characters, and an amazing protagonist (named Natsu) I don’t think that there’s anyone who wouldn’t enjoy the series if they gave it a chance.

The supernatural elements, well you can tell from the title. Faeries and goblins, witches and wizards. These are all much more elaborated here, though, and stunningly executed to form an awesome show.

The plot twists don’t appear too much, but also aren’t so scarce that you barely notice them. The perfect combo for the perfect show, that’s the best way to describe it.

8. My Otome

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
8/10
19/20
7/10
34/40

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Drama
Episodes: 26

Anime Storyline:

With an amazing yet unique art style, My Otome is an epic anime you won’t regret watching.

The Plot is nothing but interesting, intriguing and hilarious at some points.

The supernatural elements don’t come in with fantastical creatures like unicorns or fairies, but rather with powers and superhuman abilities, as well as extraterrestrial items and beings.

Plot twists, plot twists. I love these, but I hate them, and in this series, they’re more than present. Even though they drive me crazy, there’s just something about them that keeps me watching.

7. The Seven Deadly Sins

Seven Deadly Sins
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
15/20
10/10
35/40

Genre: Adventure, Shounen, Supernatural
Episodes: 96 (4 Seasons)

Anime Storyline:

A fun anime Netflix series that doesn’t go too dark, but still manages to keep it suspenseful.

The Plot of Seven Deadly Sins is based off a Manga, like many other Anime out there. The series personifies the famous Seven Deadly Sins in order to create an amazingly illustrated, awesomely written and creative series loved by many.

The supernatural elements of course come in with the sins. The setting is similar to medieval sorts with knights as well as taverns.

The plot twists that appear here and there don’t always majorly change the plot, but there are a few chosen ones to really intensify the story.

6. Little Witch Academia

Little witch academia
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
18/20
9/10
37/40

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, School
Episodes: 25

Anime Storyline:

Though it might be aimed at a younger audience, don’t underestimate how much you can get out of this series.

Along with the plot, the art style is amazing, the animation smooth and the story works in a way that younger kids can understand it, but it’s still really enjoyable (yet sometimes a little cringey)

The Supernatural element is where it gets really fun, with unique powers, characters that have them and with goofy situations they get themselves into because of these powers.

The plot twists here might be a little bit lacking, but all its other aspects make up for it, and overall this is still a hilarious and fun series when you’re looking for a little lighthearted fun.

5. No Game No Life

No Game No Life
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
9/10
19/20
9/10
37/40

Genre: Adventure, Game, Supernatural
Episodes: 12

Anime Storyline:

Another anime related to gaming, No Game No Life goes beyond the barriers of typical Anime.

The plot follows two people who play a game, known as the ultimate masters of this game, who’re basically just two teenagers. We follow them on countless journeys, whether in-game or out.

The supernatural comes in once again with the help of video game fantasy, yet it’s still amazingly executed and well done.

The plot twists make this one of my favorite series of all time, and it’s perfectly put together to make you curious as to what happens next, but to also keep you entertained at the very same time.

4. Danganronpa: The Animation

Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
18/20
9/10
37/40

Genre: Psychological, Horror, Mystery
Episodes: 13

Anime Storyline:

Now, if you’re familiar with the Danganronpa franchise, you’ll know what this dark series is all about. Even if you don’t know it yet, I can guarantee you that you’ll enjoy it.

The Plot, based on the Danganronpa games features many main characters as well as villains that make this an awesome series!

The Supernatural elements come in various ways, from lots of different places, and I have to say, this whole thing is seriously impressive.

The Plot twists is where things get really dark. You see, the school our Main Protagonist plans going to might not be exactly what you’d expect, and I promise you, you’re in for a surprise.

3. The Disastrous Life of Saiki K

The Disastrous Life of Saiki K
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
19/20
9/10
38/40

Genre: Comedy, School, Supernatural
Episodes: 144

Anime Storyline:

A fun, lighthearted anime about a Psychic boy who doesn’t enjoy his life as much as it seems he should.

The Plot follows a boy named Saiki Kusuo, who has psychic powers, such as reading peoples’ minds, manipulating objects etc. His life, however, isn’t as great as we’d expect though. With hilarious scenarios he gets himself into, Saiki K is amazingly written.

The supernatural elements come from the psychic part of the series, as Saiki’s abilities are far from normal, yet that doesn’t mean that he isn’t a loveable character at all.

The plot twists here and there are mostly for humorous reasons, and it’s perfect that way.

2. Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
8/10
20/20
10/10
38/40

Genre: Action, Shounen, Supernatural
Episodes: Ongoing

Anime Storyline:

Now this, this is a gorgeously illustrated, famous and amazing series, that is absolutely a fan-favorite.

The plot is intense, yet you can still feel calm when it’s present. It’s amazingly written, and the art style is greatly admired. Following our protagonist, a boy named Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko, we see lots of events and situations they get into, good and bad.

The supernatural part comes in with the demons, who are man-eating creatures that come out at night, and these make the story amazingly suspenseful.

The plot twist is where things get really interesting. Our protagonists’ sister, Nezuko, ends up being turned into a demon herself. This is where the story really begins, and we follow Tanjiro as he tries to find a cure for Nezuko.

1. Death Note

Death Note
Plot Supernatural Elements Twist Total
10/10
20/20
10/10
40/40

Genre: Thriller, Psychological, Supernatural
Episodes: 37

Anime Storyline:

Death Note is a worldwide famous Manga and Anime series that easily takes the title of Best Supernatural Anime in our ranking, and it’s honestly my favorite anime of all time.

The Plot follows a boy named Light Yagami, who receives a Death Note, a notebook that can kill any person whose name is written inside, from a Shinigami. (A.k.a. a Death God) He starts out using this notebook for good, but soon the power goes to his head, and the more people become his followers, the more people stand against Light and his ways.

The supernatural element is definitely the Death Note itself and its strange powers, as well as the whole concept of the Shinigami.

The plot twists frequently happen and change the entire story.  You see, this series is not for those looking for something casual. This is for someone with a hardcore passion for Manga and Anime, as well as the supernatural and dark humor. Death Note really is a masterpiece in every single way and creates a whole new world I wouldn’t even have been able to think of.
