21+ Strongest Baki Characters (with Manga References)

Thumbnail - Strongest Baki Characters

With the return of Baki on Netflix, we’ve been treated to a great new season. Titled the Son of Ogre, we’ve been blessed with some truly amazing fights from the very start and we’ve gotten to see what these characters are really capable of especially in this art style that was updated from the previous 2001 anime.

With so many great fights and amazing fighters, we’ve gotten to see from this season and the last, we thought that it might be time to cover the 21+ ten strongest characters in Baki and see who is the strongest of all.

Like in other of our top ten strongest lists, one character defeating another doesn’t necessarily mean that it is stronger overall, as their skill set might just counter another.

Also remember that this list is fairly subjective so your opinion might differ from someone else’s, so be nice. That being said let’s go over the strongest characters in Baki!

20/40

Character Reasoning:

Popularly known as Supa Dokuta (Super Doctor), Kureha is a surgeon that performs wonders, both as a surgeon and as a fighter, with emphasis on the former. Would you believe Kureha could restart a person’s heart with his bare hands! Have you ever come across a doctor like that?!

Kureha is so smart, especially in the biological field that he has grown his body to a perfect physical specimen. His body build gives him the speed of an athlete, strength and rigidity of a fighter, flexibility of a high jumper, and the endurance of a runner. Would you believe that? (Baki Dou Volume 2: Chapter 9)

He could even stand up to Baki Hanma and harm the fellow with a single hit! Let’s be sincere here, Kureha is not someone you would want to mess with.

22. Hector Doyle

Character Reasoning:

You have to look past the heavily built bodies of these Baki characters, as some of them even have special attributes. Take Hekuta Doiru (as he is fondly called) as an example. This guy not only survived his execution on the electric chair but he’s also feared for his uneven fighting style.

He’s a cool, collected guy who doesn’t display much emotion other than small, confident grins when speaking. He is a highly competent and seasoned assassin, and he typically outperforms his opponents due to his knack for surprising them with unpredictable moves. (Baki: Chapter 3: From England: Doyle)

Character Reasoning:

With his real name as Yang Haiwang, You is a Chinese fighter who has trained very hard to have a perfect “diamond body”. Although Dorian is clearly mentally disabled, You doesn’t seem to care about anything but his well-being when it comes to punishing Dorian mercilessly.

You is a talented fighter of the Kaiou rank. He claims to have a “diamond” body, trained to endure wooden swords, shackles, a large laden truck, and a cannonball. His greatest achievement is remaining awake while standing under a waterfall in a typhoon.

Character Reasoning:

Now here is a character that’s pretty funny to watch. Chiharu is the kind of person that fights without regard to his own wellbeing. Why did I say so? He doesn’t appear to care about his safety and often puts himself in danger during a battle. That is also pretty much because he acts like he doesn’t feel pain.

As the leader of a racing gang called Tokkoutai. I recall a friend once telling me about when Chiharu broke his own arm over the railing. The dude was like he has never seen anything like that in an anime before and even asked himself “What is he doing?!” But later on, that ended in shouts of support.

19. Dorian Kaioh

Dorian Kaioh

Endurance Strength:

Total

5/10
22/40

Character Reasoning:

Dorian is another member of the 5 death row inmates who wanted to learn what is was like to taste defeat. Aside from that, Dorian is also one of the few people in the world to achieve the rank of Kaioh in Chinese Kempo, being the first westerner to ever achieve that title.

Dorian is willing to fight dirty, using tools like a razor-thin wire that is also razor-sharp. He also has insanely tough skin making him hard to damage. This without mentioning his ability to attack a fighter’s most important weapon, their mind. His hypnosis techniques make his opponents think that they are winning. This basically makes any opponent he faces completely open to his attacks unless they have the mental fortitude to see through it. It’s basically his version of Tsukiyomi.

All this plus his impressive stature and his willingness to get killed earns him his spot on our top 10 strongest Baki Characters. (Baki Manga Volume 1 Chapter 1: Synchronicity)

18. Ryu Kaioh

23/40

Character Reasoning:

There is a certain temple in HeilongJiang, and would you believe this old man is the head of that temple? Liu Haiwang, which is his real name, is one of the few aged characters and fighters in the Baki: The Grappler Series.

Kaiou Ryu has proved himself to be extremely severe, disciplined, and unyielding in the face of failure. Yuujiro informs him during their brief battle that breaking objects is essential in martial arts since it improves the fighter without harming anyone, demonstrating his opposition to needless violence among humans. (Baki: The Grappler Anime: Eras End)

17. Izou Motobe

Izou Motobe
Fighting

6/10
24/40

Character Reasoning:

This jujutsu master always has a forlorn and worn-out look on his face. And oh, did I mention that he is a Jujutsu master? Izou is also the same person that trains the famous Baki Hanma before his fight. As expected of a master, he did develop new skills after he lost a fight to Yuujiro.

Jokes apart, just as Kureha Shinogi is a guru in the medical field, Izou Motobe is also a guru in the world of martial arts. He is the type of person that you could just call a coach with great insight. Do you know why? That’s because he pays close attention to fighters’ skills, mistakes, opportunities which neither you nor I would not even see or identify.

(Baki Anime: Episode 8: Eras End)

16. Muhammad Ali Jr.

Muhammad Ali JR
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total

6/10
6/10
25/40

Character Reasoning:

Muhammad Ali Jr. is, as the name implies, the son of Muhammad Ali, the man that people consider to be the greatest boxer to ever live in the history of the sport. Muhammad Ali Jr. is said to have inherited all of his legendary father’s abilities and have improved upon them.

He’s faster, stronger, and more well-rounded than his father when he is in his peak condition and he has also improved upon his father’s fighting style, Muhammad Ali Kempo, making it the well-rounded and perfect style that his father dreamed of but could not accomplish.

Ali Jr. was able to effortlessly defeat a Kaioh, one of the top martial artists in the world, during the Great Raitai Tournament, basically, one shooting his opponent who was fast enough to kick an apple in half in mid-air.

Ali Jr. is also said to have knocked down his father in sparring, the first person to do so when he was only a teenager. Still, despite all these abilities, he comes up short against other people that you are going to see on this list, so we have to only give him 7 on this list of Strongest Baki Characters. (Baki Manga, Volume 18, Chapter 159: Grotesque)

15. Ron Shobun

Ron Shobun

Total

6/10
25/40

Character Reasoning:

Now this here is a character you could literally just call a Japanese Mute. Ron barely ever talks, as he just likes keeping silent except whenever necessary.

He is a stoic and composed individual. While waiting for his battle against Biscuit Oliva to begin, he is spotted meditating. When Oliva started imitating his major technique, the Hand Pocket, he started attacking mercilessly. He never felt excited or had an adrenaline rush when battling Oliva.

(Baki Manga Volume 23, Chapter 201: The Chinese Team)

14. Retsu Kaioh

Retsu Kaioh
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
13/20
6/10
6/10
25/40

Character Reasoning:

Retsu is an interesting character as he kind of acts like the Piccolo to Baki’s Goku in many ways. He plays a largely supportive role in the story and being in that kind of role can make it easy to forget just how powerful he is.

Achieving the rank of Kaioh is no small feat, being one of a few people to hold the title. Retsu is the only member of the Chinese team to win his match in the Great Raitai tournament, allowing himself to fall into all of the traps his opponent set for him and overcoming each one, even while having a dislocated elbow.

Retsu also doesn’t mind fighting dirty, as shown during his face-off against Doyle in the bar and alleyway. He uses knives, fire, and a sword to treat Doyle, like how the death row inmate treated many people before. Restu absolutely humiliated Doyle and was then fast enough to run with Doyle on his back all the way to Shinshinkai Karate headwaters to save his life.

(Baki Manga Volume 21; Chapter 185: The Festival Has Begun)

13. Doppo Orochi (Prime)

Doppo Orochi Baki
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
14/20
6/10
6/10
26/40

Character Reasoning:

Doppo Orochi is the creator of his own Karate style, ShinShinKai Karate, as well as a style of Karate that is unique to him, Orochi-ryu Karate, so you know the guy is serious.

Orochi is one of the few people alive who is able to go toe to toe in a fight with the legendary Yujiro Hanma, facing off against him and never backing down. Despite losing that fight Orochi proved how strong he was. Orochi also is widely considered to have the strongest straight punch out of anyone in the world, constantly working on it.

This guy’s training methods are seriously insane, breaking his fingers training his spear finger strikes, and having the willpower to continue past that point. On the topic of his willpower, he was willing to continue fighting, even after his hand was cut off, he will still hit you with his forearm stub. He was so mentally strong that he was still able to fight against Dorian, while still under Dorian’s hypnosis ability, not breaking it, but fighting under it.

We also have to mention how Orochi used to be a tournament champion before Baki won the title.

(Baki Manga: His Name is Baki)

12. Jack Hanma

Jack Hanma
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
15/20
6/10
6/10
27/40

Character Reasoning:

Jack Hanma is an interesting case, as he is not only the brother to the series protagonist Baki but also the son of the ogre, Yujiro Hanma. To start off, Jack is the largest character in the series, when see him in the 2018 series after his bone lengthening surgery, he stands at 8 feet tall and weighs almost 450 pounds. This already makes him dangerous, especially considering how he’s basically all muscle, using steroids to add insane amounts of muscle to his originally lean and frail frame.

Jack isn’t just a juice monkey, he has actual technique, having experience in underground fighting pits. His fighting style is officially listed as Pit Fighting, but he clearly has some experience with martial arts.

Jack is able to go toe to toe with Baki and might have won their match in the finals of the Maximum tournament if his steroids didn’t give out and now he’s even more powerful than he was before

(Baki Manga Volume 21; Chapter 185: The Festival Has Begun)

11. Katsumi Orochi (with Retsu’s Arm)

Katsumi Oroch
Fighting
Skill:

Total
15/20
6/10
6/10
27/40

Character Reasoning:

Thinking back on it, he actually is Orochi’s adopted son (Natsue and Doppo). And that aside, he is among the Karate prodigies as the third dan Shinshinkai and he is among the well respected and strongest fighters in the series.

(Baki: New Grappler Baki, Vol. 31, Chapter 269: The Arena)

10. Kaoru Hanayama

Kaoru Hanamaya
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
15/20
6/10
6/10
27/40

Character Reasoning:

If this guy was playing League of Legends, he would only ever play tanks. Seriously this guy can take some damage, he literally went into a rival gang’s base just so that they could put scars on his new tattoo and then he proceeded to wreck them all.

We have only seen Hanayama fight once in the 2018 anime, against Spec, one of the 5 death row inmates and probably the craziest one. Hanayama literally just stood there and took Spec’s barrage of attacks for 5 straight minutes, all while maintaining his stance. Once the fight minutes of free shots were over Hanayama proceeded to wreck Spec’s entire existence.

Hanayama beat Spec so bad that he was able to bring Spec to the police station only o have spec shoot him, force ammunition to explode in his mouth, and take a flash bang explosion. This ends with Spec applying a Rear Naked Choke perfectly, and Hanayama using his crushing grip strength to break out of the hold, which is usually impossible at that point.

Basically fighting Hanayama means you have to deal with someone who basically doesn’t feel pain, is huge, is a Yakuza boss, and has a powerful enough grip to tear out a section from a deck of cards. Yeah, have fun with that.

(Baki Manga: Vol.5, Chapter 39)

9. Biscuit Oliva

Biscuit Oliva
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
15/20
6/10
6/10
27/40

Character Reasoning:

A personal favorite character in the series, Oliva is literally so powerful that even though he is technically imprisoned by the United States government, they cater to his every desire. His prison is basically just his own private mansion with 24/7 security and he gets gourmet food whenever he wants.

This is because the US government uses him as a bounty hunter of sorts, going around arresting criminals that normal law enforcement can’t handle. We see how strong he is when he gets shot point-blank, while completely naked, just to laugh it off and say that won’t work.

Oliva’s muscles are so strong and dense that they can make the most impact. The only time we have ever really seen Oliva pushed in any way was during the Great Raitai Tournament when during his match it took him some time to figure out the Hand Pocket style of his opponent.

[Baki: New Grappler Baki, Vol.10, Chapter 87: Mr. Oliva]

8. Nomi no Sukune II

Nomi no Sukune 2
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
16/20
7/10
7/10
30/40

Character Reasoning:

As his name implies, he is the son of Nomi no Sukune. Nomi is a professional sumo wrestler and features in the latest arc of the Baki manga and anime series. Biscuit Oliva was rather fond of simply calling him Sukune Nomi.

There’s a lot we don’t know about him yet. Musashi Miyamoto, the preceding legendary warrior, had a more complex mindset than Nomi. When he fights, he has a cool head and speaks calmly, as seen by his encounters with the Oozeki and Biscuit Oliva.

(Baki: New Grappler Manga: Vol.30, Chapter 266: The Challenge)

7. Goki Shibukawa

Goki
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
17/20
7/10
7/10
31/40

Character Reasoning:

Popularly known as Tatsujin (the Master), Gouki Shibukawa is a participant in the underground fighting arena, and also a Jujitsu master. For a sixty-year-old man, Shibukawa is really astonishing, for he has been training before the Second World War.

Shibukawa looks to be a laid-back character, but he conceals a more aggressive part of himself, and this comes out when the situation calls for it. He’s proven himself to be conceited, war-hungry, and cruel at times. He even engaged in a full-on lethal battle with his mentor, Kihei Mikoshiba, who later sliced him with a Katana.

[Baki Manga Volume 21; Chapter 185: The Festival Has Begun]

6. Kaku Kaioh

Kaku Kaioh
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
17/20
7/10
8/10
32/40

Character Reasoning:

Despite somehow being 146, Kaioh Kaku somehow manages to be in the top 3 strongest characters in the entire Baki series. Kaioh Kaku used to be a hulking muscle monster, like other characters on this list, but soon realized the way to true power was through achieving what he calls martial arts logic, finally achieving it in his 90s.

Despite his advanced age he is one of the few people to actually strike visible fear in the eyes of Yujiro Hanma. Kaioh Kaku’s use of Saori makes him basically rubber when hit and also allows him to produce enough force in his punch to produce a massive crack in a concrete wall.

This is enough force to send Yujiro flying backward. This is crazy, not even accounting for his age.

(Baki: New Grappler Baki, Vol 20, Chapter 178: The Gathering)

5. Baki Hanma

Baki Hanma
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
18/20
8/10
8/10
34/40

Character Reasoning:

The guy that the series is named ever has to be on its list of strongest characters, right? Throughout the series, we’ve seen Baki go from an arrogant young boy who thought he was better than everyone, to a young man who just wants to be a little stronger than his dad, not the strongest in the world.

Baki has grown a lot, from being the tournament champion, to be able to take on two of the escaped death row inmates at the same time, one of the being Kusanagi with his poison hand. Baki was even able to resist the Poison’s effect and reverse them by fighting. Baki, like other people in the Japan/America team, easily handled his opponent during the Great Raitai Tournament and defeated and nearly killed Muhammad Ali Jr in under two minutes.

All this to become stronger than one person

(Baki: Hanma Baki, Vol.13, Chapter 102: The Meaning of his Name)

4. Pickle (Transformed)

Pickle
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
18/20
9/10
8/10
35/40

Character Reasoning:

Pikuru, as he is usually called in the anime of the Baki series, is a primitive and prehistoric guy who was discovered in a salty rock formation (pickled) and found to be well preserved. He actually lived during the Cretaceous/Jurassic period, as a humanoid, which means, Pickle isn’t a human in all senses of the word.

So far in the anime, Pickle has never been known to speak clearly. Although he is unable to communicate verbally, he is honorable and would never devour a creature who does not engage in combat with him. He also returned Katsumi Orochi’s arm, which he had torn off earlier, and prayed in front of the samurai warrior.

(Baki: Hanma Baki, Vol. 16, Chapter 125: History Vs Time and Space)

3. Musashi Miyamoto

Musashi Miyamoto
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
18/20
9/10
9/10
36/40

Character Reasoning:

Miyamoto is a legendary samurai in the Baki series, and also the main opponent. He is also known to be the strongest samurai to have ever lived. But in actuality, he was brought back to life when Tokugawa Sabuko cloned him from tissues in his spine and infused that with his Soul.

When it comes to Musashi, he’s quite direct. He behaves in a way that suggests he’s an aspiring martial artist after the fame and glory he previously enjoyed. When it comes to mental distance, Musashi is even more away from his teammates than Pickle is. Musashi, on the other hand, remained stuck in the past.

(Baki: New Grappler Baki, Vol.7, Chapter 53: Underground Zone)

2. Yujiro Hanma

Yujiro Hanma
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
19/20
9/10
10/10
38/40

Character Reasoning:

Now here, we do have a bit of controversy, as to whether or not Yujiro Hanma is to be ranked the top strongest fighter in Baki, or maybe it should be Yuichiro, but careful analysis shows that in some aspects where Yujiro lacks Fighting Skill and a small amount of Strength, Yuichiro makes up for it big time.

You could always read up more on him in the anime starting from this point:

(Baki: New Grappler Baki, Vol.11, Chapter 91: Unforgiveable Freedom)

1. Yuichiro Hanma

Yuichiro Hanma
Fighting
Skill:
Endurance Strength:

Total
20/20
10/10
10/10
40/40

Character Reasoning:

And here we have the fighter of all fighters, king among all human beasts, top-rated, strongest, fiercest, and most revered of all fighters in the Baki franchise. Yuichiro is the father of Yujiro, and grandfather to Baki Hanma.

I wouldn’t say much about this guy, as even his achievements and feats speak volumes, and even those of his son Yujiro, are just second to his. Of course, you could have a clearer look into more about him, just check out:
