“Power comes in response to a need, not a desire”
Growing up we may have heard this and many other iconic lines from the great Son Goku. He’s the protagonist of the Dragon ball series. The man behind Dragon ball is the legendary Akira Toriyama, he based Goku on Sun Wukong known as the Monkey King from the classic Chinese tale “Journey to the West”
Goku in a way shares some resemblance to Superman from the DC comics.
We all have watched Dragon Ball Z in our childhood. 5 PM Mon-Fri, we all used to sit in front of the TV to watch Goku beat up baddies, and also the main theme “ROCK THE DRAGON“ was our jam back then.
I think we all used to sing it at the start of the show and never missed it. It used to be a hot topic in school the next day as we used to discuss the whole episode with our friends and even fight like we were in the series.
Everyone wanted to be Goku so before acting there would be a real fight just because everyone wanted to be Goku.
It was Dragon Ball that paved the way for the rest of the anime in the world. Anime was not very common but it was Dragon ball, Pokémon & Digimon that made anime popular.
Mostly Dragon Ball Z because it was a fighting genre show and boys loved fighting shows.
As to the series, there are 5 Dragon ball series.
- The Original Dragon ball (1984)
- Dragon Ball Z (1989)
- Dragon Ball GT (1996)
- Dragon Ball Super (2015)
- Dragon Ball Heroes (2018)
How Do I Start?
These are the Dragon ball shows. Other than the shows there are 20 Dragon ball movies. 4 are under the original series, 15 are under Z and 1 is under the Superseries. Also, there have been some OVA’s as well. Hollywood also took a chance and adopted a movie on the anime back in 2009 which failed big time.
A lot of die-hard fans of the anime were infuriated. So, when talking about the movies we don’t mention Dragon Ball Evolution it’s just a disgrace to the entire DB series.
Whenever someone mentions Evolution we (DB Fans) try not to lash out at them and explain to them that it’s not a DB film rather it’s just a cheap knockoff of the anime.
For those who are planning on watching the Anime God in short, the Dragon Ball series. This is the way you should watch it and enjoy it. The whole chronological way of watching the series and the movies as well.

Dragon Ball – The Right Order To Watch
The Original Dragon ball (1984)
To start you have to watch The OG Dragon ball series where Goku is a kid and how he meets Bulma and the rest of the gang. In the start, Goku lives in the mountain and that’s where he meets Bulma, who is looking for the 4-star ball that Goku has.
From there they embark on the adventure to collect all 7 of the wishes granting orbs. Through the series we see Goku facing enemies like the Pilaf gang which honestly aren’t that much of a threat they are just a goofy crew.
The other enemies mean business as it consists of the Demon King Piccolo, Mercenary Tao, Piccolo Jr, Red Ribbon Army, etc. Goku goes against them. It gives a little background to what the dragon balls are and what they do.
In the start, they only grant you 1 wish, whatever they might be. The very first wish made in the series was by Oolong. It was a humorous wish and a pervy one too.
The OG dragon ball had some nudity and flipping moments which is why it didn’t air on the cartoon network and other channels as well.
Naruto and One Piece also aired but they were taken down because they also had similar scenes which were inappropriate for kids.
Dragon Ball Z (1989)
Dragon Ball Z is the sequel to Dragon ball. This is a DB fact that very few know, although it was supposed to be called Dragon Ball 2 someone wrote the 2 similarly like a Z. Toriyama saw this and he instantly took a liking to the idea.
Z is the reason why the franchise was a hit because of all the fights and transformations and all the unforgettable moments. Z takes place after Goku and Chi-Chi get married at the end of DB. It introduces Gohan, Goku’s son who he named after his grandfather. The order of watching is as follows.
The first thing to watch is “Dead Zone” which is the first DBZ movie and it takes place before the starting of Z. After the movie watch episode 1 till 86. Then comes a TV special named “The Father of Goku” it tells about Goku’s past as how he ended up on earth and who was his father.
Watch 87 till 107 then comes a movie again about Bardock called “Episode of Bardock”. Then 3 movies are to be watched together, “World’s Strongest”, “Tree of Might” & “Lord Slug” after these continue with the episodes from 108 till 123. Then comes a tv film about Trunks namely “History of Trunks”, watch from 124 till 125 then comes Cooler’s Revenge.
Then watch the start from 126 till 146 and comes android 13. Starting from ep 147 till 173 and the terrifying meta cooler comes to wreak havoc on the new planet Namek in “The Return Of Cooler” after dealing with cooler, Goku and the Gang encounters the legendary “Super Saiyan Broly”.
Then start where you left off from ep 174-194 and watch “Bojack Unbound”. Watch ep 195 till 207 and see the return of Broly in “Broly’s second coming”. Ep 208 till 250 and again Broly returns as “Bio Broly”.
Fun fact this is the only movie in which Goku does not takes part he only has a 5 second part at the end when Goten and Trunks defeat Bio Broly. Start watching from 251-253 and watch fusion reborn. Ep 254 till 288 and witness Goku’s ultimate attack in the “Wrath of The Dragon” and 289 is the Last episode of Z.
Dragon Ball GT (1996)
Dragon Ball GT (Grand Tour) was a sequel to Z but it was later announced as non-canon when Super was announced. Even if it’s non-canon as a true DB fan you cannot miss it because just like Z it has a lot of amazing fights and transformation namely the super Saiyan 4 transformation.
Also, GT introduced the strongest character ever in anime history, Super Saiyan 4 Gogeta. He held the title for 26 years.
Dragon Ball Super (2015)
Then comes the verifiable sequel to Z after 21 years, Dragon Ball Super. The first 2 arcs are similar to the movies Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F so if you choose to watch the movies and skip the episodes that’s fine but the anime episodes are slightly different from that of the movies but still, it’s fine.
The 2 main arcs are the Goku black and the universal arc. Initially Super faced a lot of criticism because of the poor animation but as time went on it got a lot better. It introduced the gods and angels in the series.
The series is on hiatus after the universal arc finished back in 2018. We know that it will make a return; we just do not know when. The next arc is going to be the Galactic Patrol arc, the manga is continuing so we know what to expect in the future.
After the series, we get Dragon ball super Broly. It’s the only Super movie as of yet and it’s also the 12th highest rating anime movie of all time and the number 1 dragon ball movie. It grossed more than $100 million worldwide. It also made Gogeta and Broly canon.
Dragon Ball Heroes (2018)
Next is Dragon Ball Heroes. It started right after Super ended. It’s also non-canon as it is based on an arcade card game. Episodes are very short and brief as it is only 8-9 minutes long.
The episodes solely focus on the fighting. The best thing about Heroes is that it gives some of the ideal fights and team-ups for example Goku SSGSS/SSB (super Saiyan god super Saiyan/ super Saiyan blue) vs Goku SSJ4 and we also get SSJ4 Vegito.
So, this is the way to watch the DragonBall Series in order. A must-see show that inspired a lot of other characters in the anime world as well.
