24+ BEST Gay Manhwa | BL Recommendations

Best Gay Manhwa

Yaoi always had an intense, competitive market. Fans of the genre can get excited quickly over new releases, boosting the sales or the popularity of a new franchise by just sharing it all over the place. They even get into writing their own fanfics or webtoons over time!

While there are some mainstream works like Banana Fish or Yuri!!! on Ice, recently another type of readable media surfaced, the Korean version of mangas, the manhwas and webtoons, the colored and sometimes animated comics. These both originate from South Korea, and their versatility appealed to the international audience.

Here, I gathered 25 of the best BL (boys love) manhwas and webtoons to make your days even brighter! These all include heartwarming love stories or some hard action, but they are definitely worth watching! They also got ranked based on their originality, love/yaoi focus, and the overall enjoyment factor.

The art style in this webtoon is polished and interesting, and it fits the theme totally. Sadly, the theme is hard to understand. There are various fish people in the world of Castle Swimmer, and they all have prophecies to accomplish.

The story revolves around Kappa and Siren, a simple fish and a shark prince. The latter’s objective is to kill Kappa, but he falls in love with him instead. Not so professional mister shark!

In this fantasy gay webtoon, the readers can really get invested in the characters, as they are versatile and funny in their own style. Heaven and Hell Roman Company would be the full title of the manhwa, which is a company made by God to stop the unemployment in Heaven and Hell. Seriously? I didn’t even know that people will work in the afterlife!

The main character, the angel-demon hybrid Ginger’s main objective is to confess his feelings for his friend Rum without losing him. Besides them, we also have a side character couple!

This yaoi manhwa has a pretty interesting plot going on, followed by a psychological factor all along the way. It is hard to unravel all the mysteries during your first read, and it might be hard to understand in the first parts of the manhwa.

Taemin, one day, gets hit by a truck and he wakes up in the body of Han Siwon, his childhood friend. Taemin is a strong person, and he was willing to stand up against the bullies of Han. But when he meets the actual Han Siwon, Taemin starts to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

This manhwa has a pretty good art style, and I can say that is somewhat addicting with all that yaoi spice. There are psychological and supernatural moments in the manhwa as well! So, it’s one of the most interesting gay manhwas out there.

One day, Kang Jihan gets involved with Go Siwon and they become inseparable starting from that point . Kang continues to remind Go about an incident they had in his dream, but Go just can’t remember anything. After a while, he starts to pick up memories, and everything changes from that point!

This manhwa released in 2006, deals with tragedy and unfulfilled promises. Regretting your decision is not a pleasant feeling, probably the worst. Facing reality might leave some marks on one’s soul in the process.

This work gives you hope for love but also takes away something. The brutality shown in this manhwa will give you a breeze, but rooting for Dai and Jaehee is a hard choice for the reader. Are they really a good couple, or just partners bound by destiny?

December Rain won’t be easy to read, so don’t even try reading it if you are just seeking out fun. Some manhwas are hard to read and understand. Just like that, December Rain involves some psychology and abuse, but the story itself is very captivating.

Suchae decided to travel around the country after leaving the army. He soon takes a liking to a mysterious stranger named Gusam. They continue their adventures together, and Suchae also gets to learn about Gusam’s past.

Sadly Check, Please! had to be ranked this low as it is not exactly a BL manhwa, but the story is so cute and interesting that I had to include it. This western-style manhwa revolves around a young man, Bitty, who just moved to the north for college, and he joined the hockey team. There, he met various people with hilarious names like Ransom and Shitty (lol), but he also got deeply invested in northern culture.

Bitty is a sweet character, and the comedy is also top tier. At the start of the manhwa, he isn’t even gay yet, so for the seekers of BL works this might be a let down, but not for the enjoyers of lighthearted stories!

Finnish people could get upset by this, but there really aren’t any big written works set in Finland. I think they might even agree with me on this one though! But now, we have a gay webtoon recommendations, one that is about a single father raising his daughter while seeking true love.

Juha and his lover, Sami face discrimination in the village, as people there are quite conservative. They don’t plan to give up on their dreams though, and Juha’s daughter supports the cause too!

The art is original and unique when it comes to “My Dictator Boyfriend”. Choosing gay pride as the foundation of the story, the webtoon actually planned a meaningful plot from the very start.

Immanuel became the dictator of a nation after his father stepped down, but nobody had any expectations of him. He chose Jean Jacques as his bodyguard, and their relationship soon started to grow. They are both fun characters, and My Dictator Boyfriend serves us some serious moments too besides the comedy.

Ganghyuk Choi and Joowon Kim joined forces for a heated one-night stand, and they set it in stone that there will be no emotions involved. Looks like promises mean nothing in BL manhwa either.

They start going out soon after that, and the comedy lurking around them is always on point. It might even feel like a sitcom at some point, but unlike that genre, this manhwa is actually enjoyable.

This heartwarming comedy revolves around the adult webcomic and manga author Shin Seonho, who while making a nice living from writing the former works, wants to ramp up his mastery on the field, so he hires an assistant.

His new assistant, Ko Muyeong is not just a talented right-hand man, but a talented hand-man too. Sorry for the bad joke, but Oh! My Assistant operates with humor like this too. I can recommend it for anyone, as the story is just funny all around.

Window to Window probably has the most straightforward title on this list, and I’m loving it. It features two boys who live in adjacent buildings, and their only route of communication is the airway between their windows.

Yubin is in love with Ginu, but the latter simply doesn’t care about romance. One day, he catches Yubin doing something dirty, and that awakes his interest. This work is overall sweet, and I can recommend it!

Never Understand is an easy read for anyone, as this manhwa is just pure cuteness and human drama. The characters are all realistic, they make bad decisions in the heat of the moment, but that’s not a drawback considering how this story is a slice of life.

Sometimes the manhwa is also called Out of Control. If you are interested in the rocky relationship between the most handsome and the ugliest boys of the local high school, then I can assure you that you won’t regret reading it!

DEBATE TIME! which manhwa is the most brutal on your list? I can assure you that Killing Stalking is absolutely INSANE! This psychological thriller shows a very different face of humanity, one where you can’t know who hides behind their masks.

The stalker, Yoon Bum, took a liking to the shy boy Oh Sangwoo and made the decision to break into his house. This turned out to be a big mistake, as Oh Sangwoo is actually a psychopath, someone who wouldn’t hesitate a moment to kill anyone. The relationship between these two men was built on distrust and fear, but (not)surprisingly both of them enjoy it!

In this mafia-like setting, we can take a quick peek at the quick change of people’s hearts. While some might stay attached to their crushes and lovers, other people move on fast in hopes of new adventures.

Ewon broke up with his boyfriend, but he realized his mistake and wanted to get back together. He started working for his ex’s new man, the “dirty businessman”  Mookyul. To his surprise, Mookyul soon developed feelings for Ewon.

Do you like furry stuff? Well, I don’t. But I’m willing to make a sacrifice – you’re welcome so that you can learn about this unique manhwa as well. Baxen is seemingly a Siberian husky, but in reality, he is a shapeshifter werewolf.

His new owner, Yeo Minsuk didn’t know that fact about him at first, and only adopted the dog to bring peace into his life. But instead of peace, he got something way better! Who wouldn’t want a shapeshifter as the pet?

This yaoi manhwa takes place in an alternate universe where the vampires saved humanity from a disaster, but in exchange, they became the ruling species on the planet. They go to blood banks to get their fresh human blood, and the humans should obey them at any cost.

One works as a banker in one of these blood banks, and one day he meets an outstanding vampire overlord, Shell. He isn’t like other crazy vampires, but he prefers hardcore stuff over mere blood. The relationship of One and Shell is filled with BDSM and political struggle, so it’s definitely worth checking out this manhwa!

The author of this manhwa might have felt a little lonely at the time of writing this, some of their needs and feelings are probably shown in the work too. Why am I saying this? Well, Baker On the First Floor features a BL artist as a protagonist!

The previously mentioned Sun Hwa meets a baker who moved into the first floor of their apartment building. Yes, the premise is just that. But don’t give up on it just yet, because the story is pretty detailed, and the relationship between these two men is beautiful in every way!

This manhwa gets so twisted near the end that we can’t even tell who has the moral upper hand. The story of Woojin and Hwon could be marked as just another abusive yaoi, but as they fall more and more into the darkness we can’t stop craving for more of this mess.

Hwon, one day confessed to Woojin, who didn’t accept the deal at first: he wanted Hwon to get some of his dirty jobs done first. While manipulating the man into doing more and more crimes, Woojin soon had to realize that Hwon is actually the one controlling him. Their struggle for the lead in the relationship is a fun but scary aspect of this amazing work.

Moritat is a manhwa with a western theme, mainly focusing on a man named Jesse who lost his memories after a terrorist attack. He only receives a helping hand from Law Chester, his lover.

The entire first part of the manhwa is from Jesse’s point of view, so it’s rather confusing at the start, but soon we can all get deeply involved in their case to uncover the truth of Jesse’s past. The story is remarkable, as well as the dynamic between the two men, who do not necessarily have such a good relationship as it seems.

The Warehouse is a pretty brutal manhwa, so it might not appeal to everyone in the audience. On the other hand, the story and the twists are worth staying for, and the eventual resolution was smart as well.

The 28 years old Jungho kidnapped Dohyun, his former high school classmate. The latter ruined Jungho’s life back then, and he sought revenge by torturing Dohyun. Dohyoun later developed a Stockholm syndrome for his captor, and their story took some massive turns after that.

While this manhwa doesn’t lack violent scenes, its writing is surely exceptional. One of the few works where the characters are considerate and are actually able to make good decisions with some thinking.

Dong-Gyun started to develop feelings for the cam-boy Alex, who ran by the alias of BJ. Their romantic story is realistic and captivating, but we also have a secondary ship to follow besides the main couple! I can recommend this to anyone who is searching for a more mature read, with plenty of slice-of-life elements.

Fools is an oldie goldie. The timid and emotional storytelling controls the whole flow of the manhwa, but we can also sense the impact of the transition between the 90s and the 00s styles.

To be honest, Fools is a good read for anyone really, as this shonen-ai is amazing in every sense. The art is very original, and the relationship development of the sk8r bois is also realistic

Omegaverse yaoi might be pretty confusing for an outstander, but as Randy from South Park said: the Japanese decide who is going to be gay. For starters, in this subgenre, anyone can get pregnant, no matter their gender.

Also, society is divided into three groups, the alphas, the betas, and the omegas. The former is superior, the latter is the borderline slave. As the late-bloomer omega, but physically alpha Lee Doyun forms a relationship with his fully alpha coworker, an unexpectedly fun story folds out right in front of our eyes!

One question still remains: where are the sigma males in this hierarchy?

This semi-historical work shines in every aspect. Painter of the Night is a perfect combination of erotics and art. But hey, the two might even be the same here!

Baek Nakyum makes a living from painting erotic men, and a weirdo nobleman soon takes a liking to him. Yoon Seungho barged into his life and picked up every opportunity to tie Baek and him together. By becoming his patron, the two soon started forging a beautiful relationship. The art style is amazing, as well as the character development. Can recommend!

Silent Voice became a huge success both in Japan and internationally, so it’s only natural that other works started picking up the deaf character theme as well. Sign rises well above the competition, and I absolutely think that it deserves the number one spot on this list!

Have you ever accidentally become employed in a café? I wish I could do that, but the broke college student Kang Soohwa had some doubts about it. He shortly after changed his opinion about the weird job when he found out that his boss, Yohan, is deaf.

In Kang’s eyes, Yohan wasn’t just deaf, but also very hot. Especially his voice. Their romance soon started to bloom, and the perfect balance of comedy, the focus on romantics, and the whole mood are just polished to the max for you to have fun. Make sure to read this one even if you don’t like the genre that much!
